Sorry, that's a little bit stronger than I intended. There are of course cases such as, "This is odd, every communication I have ever had with Alice about $SUBJECT previously has been encrypted, but this one is not, I wonder if there is a problem here?" But for the common case my point remains .... the fact that a message is encrypted should not enter into the validity calculation.
