Please run $ echo test | gpg -a --sign --verbose --debug ipc to see the communication with the gpg-agent. The rrror message reminds me of the time when gnome-keyring hijacked the gpg-agent connection. What version of gpg are you running - do you have an ancient gpg-agent running?
