This exact thing is happening with the obsolescent IPv4 format.
IPv6 is out there, has been stable for 20+ years, but major companies are still being slow to adopt it for cost reasons: and because they refuse to modernize, IPv4 remains obsolescent and not obsolete.
This thing you think would be silly to happen is, in fact, happening constantly in the tech space. Right now, at this very moment.
