Comment:
This has been fixed by having the vmware driver set a wider range
of horizontal and vertical frequencies (unless user has explicitly
provided them himself). Xorg now comes up in maximum resolution
as allowed by VMware, and user may tune down the resolution by
either changing /etc/X11/xorg.conf and specifying "Modes" line,
or via GNOME/KDE/xrandr resolution changing utilities.
