That's for the available packages on your repositories.
To list the installed packages, you run:
$ dpkg -l
You might also like the "apt-file" tool.
apparently there's an unknown 'apt-file' command that
isn't included in the apt package, but ...
You have to install it separately indeed.
You have to run "apt-file update" first to get the file index from the
repositories.
$ apt-file list
$
$ apt-file show

$ apt-file show \*
$
$ apt-file show apt
$ apt-file list apt
no output whatsoever, I must be missing something
apt-file search is what you're looking for
I recommend you to take a closer look to the help outputs and the man
pages to get a better understanding of each tool.
And "apt-listchanges".
I'm surprised that you feel there is something missing in the apt-*
toolset. I'm curious if you still think that after you've learned
about these.
Oh, I know why -- it is because in yum, all the commands are in the
same "yum" executable and package, whereas in apt they are spread
out in different executables and packages: apt, apt-cache,
apt-file, apt- listchanges, apt-listbugs, ...

yes, quite a problem for my tastes. The missing bit in all this
confusion is some glue/textual frontend to put the pieces
together for ease of use, IMHO.
