Hi all,

I'm currently test-running the recently-released OpenSolaris 2008.11
and have decided I'd like to have a go at replacing it with Nexenta
Core 2.

The specific problem I ran into on my first (and so far only) install
attempt is this one - lack of a driver for the machine's network
hardware:

Driver for device pci10ec,8136 is not available.

D'oh!

Running scanpci on the machine (after booting back into OpenSolaris
2008.11) gives me this:

Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet
controller

The network card works fine under OpenSol 2008.11 - so as far as I
understand, there *is* an "official" OpenSol driver for this card. But
I think it (the driver) was only made available fairly recently, and I
suspect that it may only be distributed as part of the kernel.

My plan at the moment is to try installing Nexenta Core 2 _without_
any networking support, and then acquire a driver from here:

  http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/

(under the heading "15. gani driver for Realtek rtl8169 rtl8110
rtl8168 rtl8101 PCI/PCI-Express GbE chipset")

...and attempt to install that.

But I'm largely going by guesswork here - can anyone tell me if
there's a chance of that working, or would it be a really bad idea?

Any alternative suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete.

PS. In case anyone was going to suggest just using another network
card - I would've tried that too :-), except it's not possible for the
machine in question.
