Hello people, I got this server configuration: supermicro chassis with 16hot-swap bays Supermicro motherboard with Dual Xeon 2X Super Micro SAT2-MV8 (8-Port SATA2 Controller) Nexenta OS is installed on 2X 8GB FlashDrive in ata port Hot-swap bays 1-14 = 500GB SATA2 drives Hot-swap bays 15-16 = 32GB SSD Drives (caching)
The issue I am having a follows: I got a raidz2 build of 5x500gb disks, 2x32gb cache disks and 2x500gb spares. I wanted to test the spare, and see if a spare disk is going in as soon as I pull out one of the raidz2 disk. But as soon as I pull out one of the HD that are online in the raidz2 the machine freezes, I can't run any command on it till I push that HD back in. So what happens if a HD just dies on you? will the machine get stuck and you can't bring that HD to offline so you replace it?.. Another question is, if I bring one HD to offline why isn't one of the spares goes instead of him ? What's the point of the spare HD if they not going in as a hot swap should be.
