If you're using HTTP or other URL-based protocol, it does seem that way.
Probably works for accessing devices, probably with something like
file:///dev/disk0.

You could probably also manually create a file handle using socket(),
connect() et al, and then use - (id)initWithFileDescriptor:(int)*
fileDescriptor *or - (id)initWithFileDescriptor:(int)*fileDescriptor*
closeOnDealloc:(BOOL)*flag.*
