I finally got round to track down this error. The problem was in the GSspell server (which means that setting a breakpoint Ink would not lead you to anything). Apparently, aspell was returning its suggestions with ISO-8859-1 encoding but the GSspell server was expecting UTF-8. If have changed the server to explicitly request UTF-8 encoding for suggested words and this should fix your issue (at least it did for me using a German dictionary).
