nice that you let us know, but we need some more information to be able to understand what is going wrong and to help you.
as "direct command" do you intend to build everything from source using GNUstep scripts? Are you sure you want to build everything from source instead of using Ubuntu's ready packages? I means extra-effort and being on latest development state and not release.
Please tell us more what you are trying to achieve and the exact command you issued and what the actual error is so we can understand and try to help you out.
