Hallo Keith > If you are going to do that, why not just go the whole hog, and > do a full Cygwin install -- at least of all the packages you want > to use? > Well, originally I looked for some clever tools that run on dos/windows in order to do some little enhanced tasks within ordinarily .BAT files. All this tools should resist in a directory that can be easily transfered without a big installation procedure and without any influence of the windows registry etc. (Exception: Some environment variables). This is why I was dazzled by the term "native win32". And I downloaded no installers, but only bin- and doc-packages (which I can maintain automatically with my .BAT files without going through a procedure of choosing packages, versions etc).
Now I see that I expected too much: "native win32" does obviously not mean that windows path expression as a:\ etc. are understood. E.g. I cannot create a disk image with dd if=a: of=disk_image.bin bs=1k count=1440 So you're right! Why not use cygwin's BASH or the MSYS shell? Thanks again!
