It worked, an reply to my question was posted shortly after I sent my mail to help-glpk@gnu.org The answer is. There is no limit except the amount of memory available. It's a larger problem with integer variables, because then it will depend on the structure of the instance. Try it out... and you will find out... but no official limit!
