Thanks for your correction. Yes, it comes from MSYS package,
not from binutils-2.19.1-mingw32-bin.tar.gz.

Yes, I tested ls.exe in three XP machines, ls.exe doesn't work in one
XP machine from cmd.exe shell but it works well in other two XP machines from
cmd.exe I tested.
It is not very reliable. but my main point here is the concept of "ls.exe */*"
works and
I noticed ls.exe or grep.exe from djgpp package also
supports "*/*". I like to see gnuwin32 can also support "*/*" like
"grep abc */*".
