I remember watching the Bruins victory parade after the first Cup win as it moved ever so slowly down Washington St. through a sea of humanity. They didn't have the Duck Boats then, that have proved so effective for the Celtics and Pats parades. Instead, they used open convertibles with a raised platform for two players to sit on. When the car containing Orr and McKenzie came into view, the crowd overflowed the street so that you couldn't see the car, just Bobby and Pie and the remains of a couple of six packs, floating eerily down the street. They seemed suspended over the masses. Bobby looked terrified and dead sober, fearing for his life, while Pie was ossified, a can of Schiltz in one hand and high fiveing everyone in sight with the other. Len
This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes -- Johnny McKenzie was speaking at a school, and one of the kids asked him what he did when he saw a big tough guy bearing down on him and knowing he wanted to fight... "I reach down into the back of my pants, pick up what I find there and THROW it at him!" Apocryphal or not, I love that line... --Curt it being one of the very few times I can ever remember pest extraordinaire Johnny MacKenzie actually being in a fight. He started an awful lot fights in his career, but participated in very few, and it wasn't because he wasn't tough, he was, in the off season he was a Champion bare bronc rider, but he was an agitator without equal. -----Original Message----- From: Ian Wilson <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, 2 Apr 2009 2:33 pm Subject: [GoBruins] Re: 40 years ago tonight ____________________________________ From: Michael Byrnes <[email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) > To: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Sent: Thursday, April 2, 2009 11:14:31 AM Subject: [GoBruins] Re: 40 years ago tonight This was before my time, but I remember seeing an interview with Orr decades later in which he pretty much gives Quinn a pass here. I think he said Quinn "charged" a little bit, but that he (Orr) should have been paying better attention... **************Worried about job security? Check out the 5 safest jobs in a recession.
