I have set this up by creating a "read-only" user and then passing along
the credentials via a reverse proxy that injects the authentication header.

I also set up a 301 for the logout link that forces the user back to the
dashboard and thereby forcibly logging on as the read-only user.

For users who do need to log on, I publish a different DNS name.
