I am immensely saddened, and still in shock. I never met Valmiki in person, but we were put in contact with each other by a mutual friend because we had common areas of interest and were able to help each other with research materials. He knew immeasurably more than me, but I had access to the deep pockets of our libraries here in the US, and was able to be of some little help on an occasion or two. More importantly, I think we became friends over the course of many in-depth conversations over the years. “You can trust me,” I remember him writing in one of our last exchanges. And I had not one iota of doubt that I could. Great researchers and excellent writers are not easy to find. Authentic human beings are even rarer, I think.
