To supplement this excellent summary of the history of choral music in Goa: In
1954 on the occasion of the centennial celebrations of St. Francis Xavier,
Maestro António de Figueiredo founded the Orquestra Sinfônica de Goa and put
together a Choral Group with a program that included the singing of São
Francisco Xaviera’, Richard Wagner’s Tannhauser’s Pilgrim’s March, Handel’s
Hallelujah, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The Orchestra was composed of Goan
musicians. The Choral Group was composed of Goans, many of whom had no formal
training in music. Needless to say, the performance was an astounding success.
The Orquestra Sinfônica de Goa gave several excellent performances after that,
until soon after the annexation of Goa to India when it was abolished, together
with the Academia de Música, also directed by Maestro Figueiredo.
