John,
You may not have the time, but I do, and I want to avoid people thinking there is something wrong about our feelings about immigration:
"From the positive side 71.7% of the people questioned consider that the Portuguese people should receive well the immigrants, 80.7% agree to the legalization of immigrants who contribute to Social Security, 31.2% value a multicultural society, 63% feel that Portugal needs qualified foreign labour, 66.3% feel that immigrants should have right to unemployment benefits, and 63.3% right to NHS. However the poll shows that the Portuguese are careful and critical. 55.2% feel that immigration is out of control and 48.7% are in favour of annual immigration quotas. (...) On the other hand 78% think that there are risks associated to immigration, in view of new types of criminality such as traffic of human beings and illegal immigration gangs. But 75.4% consider that unemployed immigrants should be allowed to remain in Portugal but only for a limited period of time until they find another job, 45.4% feel there are too many immigrants and 60.5% consider that those who commit crimes should be expelled."
In my opinion this is not a negative position on immigration. Many (most) of us have no negative feelings about immigrants in general, but we feel that care should be taken to avoid misuse of social benefits and an increase in criminality. And there are very few incidents occurring in Portugal involving immigrants or immigration issues.
