De Gama did not discover the sea route to India.
He reached East Africa. In Malindi, the local king lent him a Gujarati
pilot who knew the route to India.
A traditional story describes the pilot as the famous Arab navigator
Ahmad ibn Majid, but contemporary accounts place Majid elsewhere at
the time.
