Dear All

Many of you might have heard of the Belgaum-born and Karachi-educated
journalist Neville Anthony Mascarenhas. He is largely remembered for his
definitive account of the 1971 Bangladesh War of Liberation, '*The rape of
Bangla Desh'* (1971). However, it is the second book about Bangladesh:
'*Bangladesh:
A Legacy of Blood*' (1986) which has been garnering attention in
post-revolutionary Bangladesh at the moment. This account of how the
founders of Bangladesh were killed as a result of the fratricidal
disintegration of the Liberation Movement was banned by the now-overthrown
authoritarian Awami League government of Sheikh Hasina. The student leaders
who are now in control in Dhaka have been looking at Mascarenhas' book as a
cautionary tale, and certainly, if you want an account of a revolution
turned bad, it makes compelling reading.
