SanjaySubrahmanyam is one of the leading authorities in the study of the 
Portuguesecolony in India. In Portugal, there are at least two of his 
publications havebeen translated in portuguese:
Improvising Empire (Portuguese Trade andSettlement in the Bay of Bengal, 1500 - 
1700) and The Career and Legend ofVasco da Gama. 

His book onVasco was only published in Portugal in 2024, after two decades of 
beingblocked by the most conservative forces. 

Accordingto the Lisbon newspaper Expresso, Sanjay is fluent in several 
languages(Tamil, Hindi, English, French, Urdu, Spanish, Portuguese, German, 
Italian,Persian, Danish, Dutch).
