The Portuguese Language in Goa
Memory and Postcolonial Inheritance

Once the language of power, Portuguese in Goa today survives largely in
fragments. Yet it endures in memory, in the desire to use it whenever possible,
and even in the regret of those who never had the chance to learn it. In 2026,
how do these legacies shape Goa’s present?

This conversation engages with these questions while also introducing a new
book. Lusophone Goa: Tracing the Portuguese Language brings together 45 diverse
voices, each offering distinct perspectives and themes. To understand the
Portuguese language in Goa, it is necessary to hear these varied and sometimes
conflicting viewpoints, which together explore a legacy that is centuries old,
richly layered, and under pressure in contemporary life. These memories cut
across generations, geographies, personal histories, experiences of migration,
and social communities. They include the voices of academics and professionals,
as well as artists, students, and everyday speakers. In a deeply multilingual
society, this session turns attention to a language that is often overlooked,
partly because its historical and cultural role in Goa remains insufficiently
understood, even when that role is contested.
