I would have loved to attend the launch of this book with a topic close to
my heart. In fact Dilip Chico's "English Schools, Portuguese Homes and
Konkani Streets' resonated the most with me. I like to (very boastfully)
say that ours is the last generation that can switch between these 3
languages so seamlessly, a very rare feat globally.
It's truly commendable that this young man, Ahren, who I just learned is
Fredrick and Pamela's son, took on this humongous topic and edited and
produced a book of no less than 45 articles spanning a spectrum of topics
and people. No 27 is missing its author.
While the actual Portuguese language seems to be disappearing there are
other aspects that seem to have been revived and made it more democratic.
Food, music and even the decor of houses.
At the Vem Cantar competition, the enthusiasm of young Goans from schools
all over the state to sing in a language they are not familiar with and to
sing so well brought me great joy. My favorites were young boys from Don
Bosco school who introduced me to a great Portuguese song : Pôr do sol".
It would be great if Ahren turned this book into a podcast and
showcased the writers' views, ideas and reflections so they just aren't
trapped in a book but brought to life in all their myriad accents, opinions
and even their small annoyances.
Good luck, Ahren will surely buy your book when I am in Goa next!
Best,
Helga
