Dear Smita Sail,
Don't you think that the share of Goans in slavery of Africans is greater
than you admit here because there was a 'catholic' attitude towards black
skin with the tag, not-human and without soul. I have done quite a bit of
'theological search' in Europe and Portugal and in this the basic black is
*soulless*, so he could be enslaved - a total of at least 15 million
Africans, Blacks, were taken into slavery from 16th century onwards.,.
Colonise, cultivate, colere ... means to plough with a coulter,
ploughshare. Colonise, culture come from these Roman-Latin, Greek-Ionian
terms. There was a Colonus in Greek mythology. Ravindranath Tagore
translated colonise, culture etc. into Indian language from colere,
cultivate; so, culture he called krshttati, krsh, krishi for agriculture,
field-ploughing, Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee corrected him and made
krshttati into sanskriti (along with sanskrita, cultivated). Vyas,
vyavasaaya in India is cultivation from vas- to plough, and leads to
vasati, dwelling by cultivation. Jain dwelling as basadi etc.
I lost contact with you over a time.
All the best,
William Robert Da Silva
