The September 30, 2013 Dramatic Growth of Open Access is now available. This
issue is a thank-you to the hard-working staff at U.S. PubMedCentral who have
done so much to make OA happen - and are now on furlough. The question of the
impact of the shutdown of the world's largest medical research funder and a
major funder across the disciplines, the US government, is raised. It seems
obvious that if the funds to conduct research slow or stop, the need for
publication, whether toll or open access, will slow down in the coming months
and years.

One highlight this month is the new DOAJ browse by publication charges, which
makes it easy to see that about two-thirds of the journals listed in DOAJ do
not charge article processing fees.
