***Apologies for cross-posting*** Dear All
We've just published a blog post summarising some of our initial thoughts about the new flexibility allowed by the REF2021 Open Access policy in relation to preprint servers, and the key points UK HEIs and authors will need to address in response to this. https://unlockingresearch-blog.lib.cam.ac.uk/?p=2115 There are two significant caveats to take note of: 1. the manuscript deposited in the preprint server must be the "'accepted for publication' text"; and 2. the manuscript must be uploaded prior to first publication. Authors using preprint servers will still need to ensure they meet these requirements if they are to be REF eligible. Nonetheless, this is a very welcome step in the right direction which recognises the existing use of preprints in various disciplines to make research publications Open Access. I know many of our colleagues in physics, astronomy and mathematics will be extremely pleased with this announcement.
