AAAAG protests against casinos

HERALD REPORTER

PANJIM, FEB 6

A day after the casino issue rattled in the Goa Legislative Assembly, Thursday
saw a small group under the banner of Aam Aurat Admi Against Gambling (forum of
concerned organisation and individuals) posting their protest against the
floating gambling dens near the Panjim-Betim ferry point, here.

>From the ferry point the group marched to all the casino offices on the river
>Mandovi front and shouted slogans against them.

Convenor AAAG Sabina Martins called for amendment to the Goa Gambling Act to do
away with casinos. “We have written letters to the 189 panchayats asking them
to write to the CM stating they don’t want casinos.”

Martins said people have to tell their MLAs it would be difficult for them to
get elected if they don’t vow to scrap casinos. “It is important we shake these
people politically. We will not vote and ask people not to vote for leaders
supporting casino culture,” she maintained.

Anand Madganvkar said whether legal or illegal gambling in any form was not
welcome. Goa was a place for dumping all the obnoxious things of the world, he
stated.

We have spoken to Dr Wilfred de Souza, Manohar Parrikar, Shripad Naik, Babush
Monserrate and Victoria Fernandes who are all saying they don’t want casinos.
“We want to know who all are the ones saying yes,” he added.

Advocate Rui Ferreira said Jesus too physically drove away those gambling in a
temple. Goa too was like that holy temple that could not be desecrated and
gambling on casinos was hurting religious sentiments, he asserted.

Advocate Avinash Bhonsle without taking names lambasted some of the CCP
councilors, who, he alleged, were betting for casino operators. He chided the
CCP for allowing display of casino operators’ boards illegally.

AAAG have threatened to tighten the agitation in the days to come and seek
explanation from the Government over the number of casinos that can be seen
operating in river Mandovi.
