Have your say: Education
President Barack Obama's wife choked up as she addressed around 100 excited
girls at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington, north London,
where her visit earlier brought screams of excitement.
Wearing a stylish turquoise Jason Wu dress and patterned cardigan, Mrs Obama
told them: "I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very
beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by people around them.
"I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life who taught me about quiet
strength and dignity. You too can control your own destiny, please remember
that.
"Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will
be determined by your own confidence and fortitude. It won't be easy, that's
for sure, but you have everything you need.
"Everything you need you already have right here. We are counting on you, we
are counting on every single one of you to be the best that you can be. We know
you can do it, we love you, thank you so much."
Mother-of-two Mrs Obama sat smiling, riveted, as Year 11 pupil Grace Hollowell
and the school's junior choir performed the Whitney Houston hit Believe.
She high-fived another pupil's performance in front of the school where some 55
languages are spoken by around 1,000 pupils, with about two-thirds of the girls
speaking English as a second or third language.
As she addressed the crowd, Mrs Obama choked up, saying: "Wow. I can't follow
that. Let me tell you, I am just very touched and moved by all of you. Thank
you for that warm welcome, that wonderful performance.
"You know what? My husband is going to be very jealous of my afternoon because
I am spending it with all of you. He is meeting with important people but it's
not as much fun as being here."
She told the girls she had met Britain's "most extraordinary women" on her
first official visit as First Lady, including the Queen and Chancellor Alistair
Darling's wife Maggie, who she called a "true firebrand", as well as describing
Prime Minister Gordon Brown's wife Sarah as a "phenomenal woman who has been
charming and delightful".
Mrs Obama described her upbringing in Chicago in a working-class family and
said her father's battle with multiple sclerosis had taught her the importance
of love, strong values and a goodeducation.
She spoke of her first date with her husband - to a community meeting - and his
often-quoted demand to narrow the gap between the world as it is and the world
as it could be.
She put her own success down to education and added: "If you want to know the
reason why I am standing here, it's because of education. I never cut class. I
loved getting As, I liked being smart. I liked being on time. I thought being
smart is cooler than anything in the world.
"You, too, with these values, can control your own destiny. You, too, can pave
the way.
