SARS: TOURISTS TO BE SCREENED: Officials of Airport Authority of India attached to the Dabolim International Airport in close coordination with State health authorities are reported to be making all out efforts and increased surveillance over the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which has brought about a scare all around the globe. The immediate task for the concerned officials is reported to be the arrival of 1,500-odd charter tourists, who would arrive in the State from Friday (Mar 4) when the Monarch is scheduled to arrive. Later during the day, another two other charter flights are expectedAir 2000 and Monarchwhile Saturday and Sunday would be even more hectic for authorities, as more charter flights carrying tourists are scheduled to arrive. BEDLAM IN HOUSE: The dispute between the Treasury and the Opposition whether the delimitation of constituencies can be discussed in the State legislative assembly ended in exchange of allegations and eventually leading to a walk-out by the Opposition. The issue also saw two adjournment. (NT)
DELIMITATION DRAFT TO BE SCRAPPED: Even as the process of delimitation of 40 Assembly constituencies is set to be initiated all over again, National Delimitation Commission chairman Justice Kuldip Singh is likely to visit the State on 12 April for a consultation with the associate members. Indications are that a meeting of all party MLAs is likely to be held next week to discuss the matter regarding the preparation of a common proposal even as the old one, which had caused much controversy and rancour among MLAs, irrespective of party affiliations, has been discarded. STEEL DEMAND IN CHINA: A spurt in the demand for steel in China has resulted in increased export of iron ore by Mormugao Port Trust thereby dispelling doubts of a slowing down of the economy, informed chairman of MPT PK Mohanty. Though output to Japan went down to 8.41 million tonnes from 9.18 million tonnes last year the traffic at the port during 2002-2003 reached the highest ever figure of 23.65 MT as against 22.93 MT handled in the previous year. At 18.66 MT, iron ore comprises 79 per cent of the total goods exported from the port. During the year 183 vessels were loaded with ore as against 169 last year. The number of containers handled by the port increased to 9,129 tonnes as against 6,247 tonnes the previous year. The port earned a total income of Rs.198.25 crore as against Rs.196.95 crore and recorded a surplus of Rs.37.20 crore as against Rs.7.72 crore. The petroleum, oil and lubricants traffic went up from 1.49 MT to 1.53 MT. The port established a record of unloading 10,942 tonnes iron ore on a single day on 26 February. (GT)
MPT TO ACCOMMODATE BIGGER SHIPS: The Mormugao Port Trust will bid adieu to the calendar year 2003 proudly, with the ability to accommodate ships with a draft of 15 metres, as compared to the present 13 metres, thus increasing the efficiency of the port four fold. The MPT also has scheduled the completion of their "world class cruise terminal" with the next two years, with a view to promote tourism in the State. (H)
"TO PROTECT GOANS": More than 75 per cent of the land allotted under the 20-point programmes has either been rented our or sold, informed revenue Minister Pandurang Madkaikar during question Hour. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar informed that the government would be amending the 20-point programme, as it was against Goan interests. "One of the requirements of programme is that the applicant should not own land anywhere in the State. We will modify this requirement from 'state' to 'taluka," claimed Mr Parrikar. Cortalim MLA Mathany Saldanha opined that land acquired under the 20-point programme was sold and later resold for large margins of profit. (H)
AMBELIM DY SARPANCH DISQUALIFIED: Perhaps the first case of its kind reported since the panchayat polls held in January last year, the deputy sarpanch of Ambelim village, Michael Rodrigues, has been disqualified from the membership of the body, for failing to attend four consecutive ordinary meetings held by the panchayat. ONE COMMITS SUICIDE: One Harish Krishna Desai, 70, of Karwar, committed suicide by hanging himself to a roof with the help of a nylon rope in his flat in Hill Crest Apartment, near civil court in Mapusa, on 4 April. (GT)
SUICIDE CASE: Sunil S Chari, a 39-year-old man from Shirvade-Navelim in Salcete is reported to have committed by jumping into the Zuari river at Borim on Wednesday. (H)
BODY FOUND: Mapusa police recovered the body of an unidentified woman at Parra late Thursday evening. The deceased, estimated to be about 60 years, appears to be a beggar. (H)
TRUCK KNOCKS DOWN MAN: Vasant Kumar Dixit, a 58-year-old pedestrian, was knocked down by a truck near the Panaji post office, while crossing the road at about 11.55 am yesterday. The truck driver, Mahmoud Nadaf, was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving. (GT)
NEWBORN'S BODY FOUND: The dead body of a newly born baby was found near a hospital at Bambolim on Wednesday. The infant born at the GM Hospital, died in the hospital. The body was handed over to the parents. However, the parents abandoned the body near a hospital opposite the GMC. An offence has been registered against the child's mother, one Shevanti from Canacona. (H)
MINORS RESCUED FROM BAINA: Vasco Police on Thursday rescued six minors from the infamous red-light area in Baina, Vasco. (H)
ENCROACHMENT ON COMUNIDADE LAND: The South Goa Deputy Collector (LA), Venancio Furtado, who was entrusted with the work of scrutinizing the applications for encroachments in South Goa Comunidade property, has rejected over 500 claims that were put forth for regularization on encroachments on Comunidade land. CONFUSION OVER STAMP DUTY: People in Goa are totally confused over the recent budget announcement made by CM Manohar Parrikar over the existing stamp duty of 8 per cent being reduced to 5 per cent. Those in the process of purchasing land have already prepared sale deeds taking into account the new rates announced by the CM, who is also the Finance minister. (GT)
MEDICLAIM SCHEME RULES RELAXED: The government will issue cheques in favour of the medical institutions in deserving cases when patients requiring emergency treatment seek medical aid outside the State under the Mediclaim Scheme of the State government. Presently, patients have to deposit the amount in the designated hospitals, and seek reimbursements later. (GT)

FRENCH VISITORS AT FONTAINHAS: Yesterday, the heritage homes of the celebrated Latin Quarter of Panjim were visited by 300 French, to sample Goa's culture, art, music, serenading and internationally-acknowledged hospitality. The French group, who arrived in Goa on April 2, to attend a conference of the Renault sports car at Hyatt Resort, were provided a mini Fontainhas Festival by entertainment expert Messias Tavares. Divided in smaller groups, the tourists visited the select heritage homes and the three art galleries in Fontainhas, to see the paintings of well-known artists. At each venue they were welcomed by Goa's top serenaders like Emiliano da Cruz, Savio & Bruno, Noronha trio, Joaquim de Souza, Malcom duo and others. Daphne Sequeira played choral music on the organ at the chapel. Western music was provided by Shelton (solo), Valentino and Cezinho Fernandes in front of the Sao Sebastiao chapel and at a nearby lane, while traditional folk dances like the traditional Lamp Dance, Zagor, Dekhni, Mando and Corredinho were performed by popular folk troupes--Kanta Gaude, Alegria and Kepechim Kirnam.
