(GT) BJP TERMS CONG CHARGES ON EVMS BASELESS: Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly condemned the baseless and wild allegations by Mr Vijay Sardessai, Congress general secretary, apprehending tampering with voting machines by BJP-led government. (H) HIGHER VOTER TURNOUT: The just-concluded parliamentary elections for two seats in Goa witnessed heavy turnout as the total voting percentage touched nearly 59 per cent, an increase of 13 per cent over the votes polled in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections. This time voters from minority communities also showed keen interest and enthusiasm and around 60,000 to 70,000 alone voted in the Panaji parliamentary constituency.The young and the women voters' turnout stated to have been more this time compared to the last Lok Sabha election. Young and first-time voters also showed enthusiasm.A rough estimate indicates that nearly 50,000 voters could not cast their votes in view of their names being not included in the electoral rolls. Had their names been included in the rolls, polling percentage would have crossed 70 per cent. (NT) TESTING TIME FOR SKY BUS: The Konkan Railway Corporation's Rs.50-crore sky bus test rail project is nearing completion at the Margao railway station. The 1.6 km test rail being erected in Margao is expected to be completed in all respects by May-end or early July. (H) 8-YR-OLD CRUSHED TO DEATH: An eight-year-old girl died while another five-year-old was seriously injured when they were ran over by a truck at Sheller, Canacona. (GT) HELP LABOURERS GET JUSTICE: ARCHBISHOP: Noting that the situation of labourers in Goa deserves urgent attention and action, Archbishop-Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao has asked the Catholic community to identify migrants, domestic workers and child labourers and accompany them in their quest for justice. 'The clarion call of our Diocesan Synod for ushering in a New Society needs to create in each of us a sense of urgency about implementing the preferential option for the poor and for social justice,' stated Archbishop Ferrao, in his May Day message to the Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. (H) SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR: 'I'll reach home in another 15 minutes time," Joaquim promised his son Angelo over his cellphone at 8.30 pm on April 25. These were the last words that 46-year-old Antonio Joaquim Rodrigues uttered to his son. His body was found floating in the river Tar at Mapusa the next morning. Joaquim is suspected to have been brutally murdered by four tourists, who had hired his tax on a sightseeing trip to Terekhol. (H) TWO NEW KONKANI NOVELS: Two new novels in Konkani published by Asmitai Pratishthan will be released at a public function to be held on 4 May at the Kala Academy's Black Box. The two novels to be released are 'Yug Sanvar' by the Sahitya Akademi award winner Mahableshwar Sail and 'Dika' by Devidas Kadam. 'Yug Sanvar' has the historical setting of the 16th century and the story has the background of religious conversion and inquisition. (GT) REBELLION OF THE AVC GAONCARS: In 1575, the Portuguese Viceroy Antonio Monis Barreto, in order to pacify the AVC rebels, appointed Estevao Rodrigues, Tax Collector for the region. When Estevao Rodrigues went to Cuncolim to collect taxes, the gaoncars maintained a stony silence. The despondent Estevao Rodrigues, accompanied by his Naiques, went to Assolna, where he took a hard line in his harassment of the gaoncars and demanded prompt payment of all due taxes. Assolna was then the administrative centre for Velim and Ambelim and the gaoncars of these three villages, in their belligerence, put to death Estevao Rodrigues and his Naiqeus. Emboldened by their own actions, the gaoncars launched a campaign of resistance and attacked the Administrative Posts and went as far as Rachol, the capital of Salcete. They threatened the Rachol Fort, demanding religious freedom and asserting that their religion was central to their village life. They made it clear that the measures, undertaken by the Jesuits, to propagate an alien religion were repugnant to them. (GT) HAS GOA MISSED THE I T BUS? When the whole country is talking of IT, Goa has nothing to talk or contribute to this industry. But when we talk of IT today, it conjures a picture of a young technology focused, vibrant and clean industry, which provides employment to young people. So when we see the young people of Goa unemployed then the question is why have we not gone into IT.Instead of building four-lane roads and bridges it would be wiser to build a Technology Park which would bring in industry to Goa and provide employment rather than spend on wasteful and unnecessary projects. Adrian Duggan was charged with the murder of Catherine Campbell, who was found stabbed to death, in a guesthouse at Vagator early Christmas Day morning. (GT) LAST BRITISH CHARTER: The last charter flight of the season will leave for Britain on Saturday morning. The Monarch Airlines A330 will be carrying the last of the tourists brought to the State by Somak Holidays through leading Indian travel agents, UVI. Somak has operated a total of 56 flights to the state over the past 28 weeks from Manchester and Gatwick. The company will resume operation in October this year. It is learnt that the Travel Corporation of India will be dispatching its last flight to the UK today (30 April). In a press release, Adv Rodrigues said that the recent brutal murder of taxi driver Antonio Rodrigues, shows how unsafe life for the common man is and has demanded that the government financially compensate the family members of the victims of such tragic murders.
