Isidore told Gomantak Times that some vested interests were spreading rumours that he was planning to resign from the Congress. (GT) EDUCATION DEPT SUSPENDS TWO TEACHERS: The department of education suspended from service two government teaches on August 11, on alleged charges of molestation and misbehaviour. (H) GOVERNMENT ASKS FOREIGNERS: A Ribandar-based Norwegian journalist, Ivar Fjeld, one evening early this week, found a couple of policemen at his door. Clearly a fallout of the media expose on paedophiles and other sexual crimes in Goa allegedly by foreigners. Parrikar's government has ordered a widespread fact finding exercise. The danger, however, is painting all foreigners with the same brush and calling them criminals.Foreign nationals living in the state - estimated to number about 2,000 - feel that it is injustice to blame all foreigners for the criminal activities of a few. (GT) DAUGHTER IN POLICE CUSTODY: The police, on August 11, took custody of Manju nee Francisca, the minor adopted daughter of the to-be-deported German national, Jorg Harry Ringleman, and lodged her at Apna Ghar, the government-run remand home. (H) AZGAONKAR GHERAOED; JOAQUIM TAKEN INTO CUSTODY: Opposition to the Housing Board project in Cuncolim gained momentum on August 11 with agitated residents gheraoing Housing Minister Babu Azgaonkar leading to the arrest of Cuncolim MLA Joaquim Alemao and 19 others under preventive detention. The protestors conveyed their strong opposition to Azgaonkar and said the land acquisition would not only bring in outsiders, but would destroy the age-old football ground. (H) REVISION OF VOTERS LIST: The estimated 50,000 Goan voters who found their names missing from the electoral rolls during the last Lok Sabha elections of April 26 and had to return home without voting, now have an opportunity to include their names isn't he rolls once again. The special summary revision of the electoral rolls in Goa with respect to January 1, 2005, as the qualifying date is already underway and the one-month period for filing claims and objections begins on September 15. (NT) HANDLE CHILD MOLESTATION CASES SENSITIVELY: CRG: Children Rights in Goa is distressed by the molestation cases that have occurred in two schools within a span of three days. It urges the concerned schools' managements to fully investigate the cases and take necessary steps to ensure that no child is subject to such abuse in future. CRG also urges the media to report such cases responsibly without sensationalizing the issue and not to divulge the identities of the victims in such cases. (GT) EDUCATIONAL ESTATE AT NYLON 6,6 SITE: The state cabinet which is scheduled to meet on 16 August is likely to take a decision of handing over 300 acres of land belonging to Industrial Development Corporation to Goa Education Development Corporation for setting up an educational estate at Keri, in Ponda taluka. The site was earlier allotted for Nylon 6,6 plant. (GT) FOUND HANGING: A 28-year-old woman, Neelama Maazar, hailing from Karnataka, but residing at Zuari Nagar, was found hanging dead on a tree near a spring at Zuari Nagar on August 11. (H) WOMAN FOUND UNCONSCIOUS: A 60-year-old woman has been admitted at the GMC Hospital Bambolim in a critical condition. The Agasaim police informed that the woman was lying in an unconscious state on the road in front of the Holy Cross Church at Bambolim. The police informed that the lady has been identified as Ms Dolfina from the IPHB card found in her possession. (NT) FISHERMEN OPPOSE: Fisheries department's plans for a dry-dock and an export promotion unit at Cutbona jetty has run into rough weather. The traditional fishermen of Velim, Ambelim, Assolna and Chinchinim - inhabiting the banks of River Sal - have opposed all plans for a dry dock and the export unit. (H) PEATS UNWELL: The eighty-year-old paedophile, Freddy Peats, who is serving a life sentence at Central Jail, Aguada, was admitted to the GMC hospital on August 10 after he complained of weakness. (NT) THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH KONKANI MUSIC: Portuguese culture in Goa flourishes in one of the most unlikely of media: Konkani music. It is probably one of those unconscious things, not really subliminal, but not quite overt either. The how is easy to pinpoint. We might think of it as Konkani music, but when a foreign tourist hears it whilst living deep in the groves of a Goan village, the Konkani music coming from a neighbour's radio-stereo, what he hears, are unmistakable Portuguese melodies and instrumentation. It's the same type of music he would hear in the villages of Portugal or Spain, the Azores or in Central America. The tongue being alien, nobody knows any better.
