(H) CM DENIES 'POACHING': The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, on October 25, denied that he was 'poaching' Opposition MLAs in order to keep himself in power. He was reacting to certain comments made by the state Governor, Mr SC Jamir, in an interview with a national English daily withy regard to the induction of Mr Isidore Fernandes in the BJP. (NT) THE ANTIQUE COFFIN OF ST XAVIER IS SAFE: A coffin, in which Goa's patron St Francis Xavier's relics were once kept at least from 1744 till 1953, was one of the rare antiques in the Professed House of Basilica of Bom saved from the major fire at Old Goa on Thursday. According to Fr Moreno de Souza, the Professed House was the first to be set up in Asia even before the Basilica was built. The Casa Professa had a room with rare antiques including this coffin and vestments worn by the saint. The then Archbishop of Pamplona (Navarre), Rector of the Castle of SFX, had asked for the coffin in 1976 and the Goa Archbishop-Patriarch had agree to give it to them. But the Archaeological Survey of India had declined to part with the antique on the ground that it had great historical value. (H) NO FURTHER SKY BUS TRIAL.Director General of Police Amod Kanth on Monday said that the police would not allow any further trial of the sky bus until the ongoing investigations were completed. He said that the police would not allow the next trial till the time they were convinced about the safety. (GT) THIEVES DECAMP WITH ARTICLES: Unidentified thieves entered the Hanuman theatre in Mapusa on Sunday night and decamped with musical instruments, five mikes and some other articles all worth around Rs.57,000. (GT) SEX MANIAC IN CHICALIM: The city police (Vasco) have received complaints about a sex maniac sexually assaulting females in the Chicalim area, which has created panic among the women. For the last 8 days, Chicalim residents particularly the womenfolk are covering with fear and they stay behind doors in their homes for fear of being attacked by a sex maniac, said Vasco PI Mahesh Gaonkar. (GT) "OUTSIDERS MAKE LIVES MISERABLE": Female residents and even tourists in the northern coastal belt are now finding themselves at the receiving end of the flip side of tourism. Many are unable to venture out onto any of the beaches without a male escort for fear of being molested or eve teased by visiting Indian tourists. The most recent incident occurred on Saturday when two drunks tired to misbehave with a woman at the Baga beach. The duo was given a sound beating by local residents before being handed over to the police. (GT) TELGI SCAM IMPACT: The State Collectorates, tightening the bolts on the sale of stamp papers in Goa after the notorious 'Telgi stamp paper scam', have issued two show cause notices to the local stamp paper vendors, who have not filed the returns, and their registration would be cancelled if they fail to reply to the same within the stipulated time. (NT) "NO MORE SHACKS": The State government will not relax the rules to allow for more number of shacks than officially allotted on the beaches of Goa despite a strong demand this year in view of expected high turnout of tourists for the Exposition and the International Film Festival of India. "The rules are what we have to abide by and there will be no relaxation of the rules," the Tourism Minister, Mr Matanhy Saldanha, told the Navhind Times. (NT) UK NATIONAL FOUND DEAD IN MAPUSA: A British national, Simon John Colis, was found dead in the fields behind the Sankalp Hospital in Mapusa on October 25 afternoon. According to information provided by sources in the police, the Briton had got himself admitted to the Sankalp Hospital late yesterday evening stating that he was sick and was being treated there. The sources said that the person went missing between 2 and 3 pm from the hospital and a police complaint was filed by the hospital authorities. (NT) CARRASCO UPSETS RIVAL'S JOURNEY: Outsmarting all his rivals at the Mapusa Municipal Council, Chairperson Michael Carrasco filed a petition before the District and Sessions Court, Panaji, challenging the motion of no-confidence moved against him by councilors. (GT) CARRASCO OUSTED: Mapusa Municipal Council Chairman Michael Carrasco was ousted from office by a margin of 8-0 votes on Monday. Eight members voted in favour of the no-confidence motion while five members, including Mr Carrasco, remained absent. (H) KORGAO VILLAGERS AGAINST GARBAGE PLANT: Residents of Korgao village in Pernem are angry with a few local BJP workers, some of whom are elected panchas of the Gram Panchayat, for "involvement" in the approval of Goa government's proposal to set up a garbage treatment plant in their village. Apparently, the villagers were happy that the government was taking steps to set up an industrial project in the village, but it was not disclosed to anyone what kind of a project it would be. (GT) NUVEM WANTS BAN ON 75-METER SETBACK: Exasperated over the freeze on land development on both sides of the National Highway No.17, the Nuvem village panchayat has asked the government to lift the ban on development within the 75-meter setback area within a month.
