Listen to Isabel, an English lecturer at Dhempe's, read the story which touches on themes of migration, love-hate relationships with The Foreigner, and more. (We have both good and bad within us.) ----------------------------------------------------------------- GNBedit ----------------------------------------------------------------- 'Goa bags second prize at Bangalore IT.in 2005 event' we're told in the newspaper headline. What's the prize for? Its stall promising 'Discover IT in Goa' and 'Work in paradise'. If this can happen, then Goa surely deserves a prize -- for selling hype so effectively. Goa's IT sector is in shambles. We've lost our headstart and even once backward destinations like Kerala, Mysore or even Hubli have probably overtaken Goa in IT. Goa has not just failed to tap its potential, but lacked vision even under an IITian chief minister and highly paid consultants. The state has funded firms that were flops or hoaxes, and apart from significantly enlarging our toxic wastes problem (by dumping, literally, computers in the name of a directionless Cyberage programme), Goa has achieved the impossible. It has squandered away all the pluses in its favour -- English-speaking skills, abilities to deal with the outside world, the potential that comes from having a large expat population, a great destination that any brains in IT would like to visit or come for seminars to, and even active voluntary and professional bodies like the Computer Society of India and the local free software network, ILUGGoa. Goa deserves a prize... for moving in reverse gear as far as IT goes. --------------------------------------------------------------- DEATHS ----------------------------------------------------------------- BETIM: Carmelina Mascarenhas, b 1955. While cucumbers are commonly found in raita, other vegetables or fruits can be used. Try grated eggplant, potato, or chopped spinach. How about a banana or mango raita? Increase the spicy flavor by adding garam masala, a spicy, aromatic Indian blend of peppercorns, cardamon, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, nutmeg, turmeric, and fennel seeds available in gourmet or natural food stores. Cucumber Raita 2 cucumbers (peeled, seeded, and grated or chopped), 1 cup plain nonfat yogurt. 1 teaspoon chopped fresh mint leaves, 1/2 green chili (chopped), 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds (roasted), 1/4 teaspoon chili powder, a pinch of black pepper powder, (a handful of chopped cilantro/coriander leaves for garnishing). Press the cucumbers through a strainer to remove some of the water. Combine with other ingredients. Garnish with cilantro leaves. Enjoy. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ||g |||o |||a |||n |||e |||t || Issue compiled by ||__|||__|||__|||__|||__|||__|| Frederick Noronha |/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\| [EMAIL PROTECTED] Copyleft Goanet 2005 http://www.creativecommons.org You may reproduce this ezine in its entirety, with credits retained. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Goanet, the net-worker of all networks.
