The dhow was already looking out of balance, but the captain ignored a plea not to put out to sea, said Filipina waitress Nanette Salgado. She said she repeatedly complained to the captain about passengers overcrowding the upper deck, as a disco started shortly after the boat set sail. "Before we left, I was already warning guests to please not overcrowd the upper level because it may cause the boat to lose its balance," said Ms Salgado, aged 26. She said that she had made it known to the captain that she felt they should not leave, because the boat looked out of balance, but was dismissed. "I complained and when the captain said that we were still leaving, I demanded that we (all three waitresses aboard) get life jackets for our own safety. "So he gave us a life jacket each." The other waitresses were Filipinas Queenie Dungca, who Ms Salgado identified at the CID as one of those who died and Nenita Jacob, who was last night unaccounted for. "When the ship left, the music started and the dancing started," said Ms Salgado. "I couldn't control the guests anymore and so there were many people on the upper level. Other than that I felt that there were too many people on the ship. We also had many heavy pieces of equipment. Next thing you know, we were tipping to the right. The ship was sinking and it all happened in seconds. "People on the upper deck were being thrown off, but on the lower deck there were still people who were having their dinner and they were trapped." She said she was on the upper deck when the boat toppled. "I had my lifejacket with me and when I was in the water I was afraid I was going to be pulled down deep in the water by the boat and drown, so I dove and swam as far away as I could. I held on to my life jacket as I swam and when I felt I was far enough, I stopped and put on my life vest and waited for help." Rescuers pulled her to safety and she was sent to Salmaniya Medical Complex for treatment for minor injuries. "I was sent home afterwards and I cannot sleep, so I went to church to pray." She said her mother in Davao, Philippines, was frantic and called her yesterday to find out if she was safe. "My daughter is three-years-old and she keeps me going. I want to stay in Bahrain despite what's happened. I need to save up for my child's future." Ms Salgado arrived in the country only last November. -------------------------------------------------------------- DEATHS AND REMEMBRANCES -------------------------------------------------------------- PRE-LIBERATION ANJEDIVA INCHARGE PASSES AWAY; Last Portuguese military in-charge Antonio Francisco Dias, 94, who served at Anjediva Island, breathed his last at his Galgibaga, Canacona residence Wednesday. FROM www.goanvoice.org.uk -------------------------------------------------------------- Further to the reported murder of Fr Eusebio and the apprehension of two suspects, Goanet has had a profusion of reactions to the murder. A few have wanted to be 'judge, jury and executioner' including "public execution by crucifixion upside down, stoning and harvesting of vital organs." Indeed the Old Testament was used to justify this bizarre proposal. Others took the view that the matter was entirely for the courts to determine. At the same time, a lot of discussion has taken place on the death penalty. Controversy has emerged on proposed legislation in Goa, to make HIV/AIDS testing compulsory for those planning to get married. Do visit Goanet to note the range of opinions on this issue. If the legislation were to be enacted, apparently, Goa would be the first Indian state to legislate in this manner. Goan Voice (UK) readers are probably aware of the extent of home-schooling in the UK and the USA. However, several inquiries on Goanet have asked how prevalent home-schooling is in Goa. For those GV(UK) readers keen to know about protocols and customs at the time of marriage, an interesting account by Domnic Fernandes spells out the fascinating ritual in considerable detail. What does "Kokno" really mean? Is it a derogatory term or an endearing one in Konkani usage for a Hindu? Find out more about this matter on Goanet.
