BY CORNEL DACOSTA -------------------------------------------------------------- The Goan traveller-poet Brian Mendonca will soon launch his debut volume of poems titled "Last Bus to Vasco: Poems from Goa." This volume is a collection of 50 poems written on Goa in Goa. The poems represent a poetic history of Goa spanning 20 years from 1986 to 2005. Attached to the book will be a CD in the poet's own voice with rustic sounds of Goa in the background. Searching questions have been posed on Goanet on the ownership and management of the mining industry in Goa. In turn, there have been some in-depth answers to the question which shed much light on this little known lucrative industry. For an unusual account of the walk on water by Jesus Christ, Goan Voice (UK) readers will find a fascinating explanation provided by a Florida University professor. His claim is that Christ could have walked on a floating piece of ice. This "less than miraculous" explanation from his study found an unusual combination of water and atmospheric conditions which could have led to ice formation on the Sea of Galilee. The ice would have been largely invisible to onlookers. Discover the unusual story of how Jaffna, in Sri Lanka, became Catholic en masse overnight and why it reverted to Hinduism with equal alacrity when the Dutch replaced the Portuguese in 1658. This is a historical account by Prof T Abeyasinghe in his book "Jaffna under the Portuguese" first published in 1986. "The only way to save Goa is to fight the politics of fear and speak out against all those who are responsible for trying to turn Goa into another Gujarat." These are the alarming words following a report "Broken Peace: A Fact Finding Report on the Communal Violence in Goa in March 2006." The excellent report is by Nandita Haksar, a Supreme Court lawyer. Find out from Goanet how to obtain the report on-line. Finally, there is yet more from Domnic Fernandes on Goanet and specifically on his introspective historical account of events and life in Goa of old. This time, we are offered a " Reminiscent Tour of Mapusa Town in the 1950s." The account is in three parts. Thankfully, Domnic has finally succumbed to pressure from many eager readers to soon have his articles published in a book. Indeed, he has already received orders for signed copies of the forthcoming book. By way of a brief comment, I feel that the book would make an excellent present for Goan and non Goan friends and that the first print is likely to run out very quickly. Peel the potatoes and slice them extremely thinly using a mandolin. Rinse the slices well and dry them thoroughly. Grease 4 (4-inch) baking pans with 1-inch sides. Beginning at the outer edge, carefully arrange overlapping potato slices in a circular fashion, finishing at the center. This should create a shallow potato basket. Brush with some olive oil and bake until lightly browned. Using a sharp knife make small incisions all over the leg of lamb and insert roughly half of the garlic into the slivers. In a heavy pan over medium heat, brown the lamb on all sides in extra-virgin olive oil, adding the chopped herbs. Cover, place in the oven, and cook slowly for 1 hour and 15 minutes, until meat is cooked through. Reduce the lamb stock over medium heat until it becomes a syrup-like consistency. Cube the dry bread and toast it briefly in a cast-iron skillet. Cut a clove of garlic into thin slices and fry them in olive oil without allowing them to brown. To make the dressing for the greens, combine the extra-virgin olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. To serve, place a potato basket on each plate. Fill with slices of lamb and top with lamb reduction. --------------------------------------------------------------- ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ||g |||o |||a |||n |||e |||t || Issue compiled by ||__|||__|||__|||__|||__|||__|| Frederick Noronha |/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\|/__\| [EMAIL PROTECTED] Copyleft Goanet 2005 http://www.creativecommons.org You may reproduce this ezine in its entirety, with credits retained. -------------------------------------------------------------- Goanet, the net-worker of all networks.
