Goa govt crisis: Financial vote put off

NDTV Correspondent
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 (Panaji)
A threat is on the anvil for Digamber Kamat, who is grappling with a
bid to unseat his Congress led government in Goa.

The financial vote, which was slated for Wednesday, was put off for a
day as the chief minister left to visit an accident site.

The Congress will be meeting on Wednesday evening to decide whether to
adjourn the assembly sine die or not.

The crisis began in the morning, when several MLAs threatened to pull
out support.

Sources claim that independent MLA Vishwajeet Rane, who is the son of
a former chief minister, is the person behind the revolt.

Rane reportedly tried to get 3 NCP MLAs to withdraw from the
government, which could have brought the government down. But the NCP
denies there's any such move.

Union minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi is in Goa to resolve the issue.
The Digambar Kamat government has been in power for only 7 months.

Goa govt faces crisis as ministers, MLAs threaten to quit
Zeenews Bureau

Panaji, Jan 16: The Congress-led coalition government in Goa is facing
fresh crisis after some ministers and MLAs threatened to quit on
Wednesday, expressing their displeasure over its functioning.

However, the crisis seemed to be averted for the day as the Assembly
was adjourned till Thursday.

Even as senior party leader PR Dasmunshi rushed to Goa after the
ministers and MLAs issued resignation threats, Congress sought to
downplay the crisis, saying everything was under control.

Chief Minister Digamber Kamat's coalition government has 21 members in
the 40-seat Goa Assembly. It has the support of 15 Congress MLAs,
three of the NCP, two of the SGF, one of the UGDP and an independent
legislator.

The opposition BJP-led Goa Democratic Alliance, or GDA, has 14 BJP
legislators, two of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and an
independent MLA.

In July too, the coalition government was reduced to minority after
one of its allies and an independent withdrew support. However, in
August, the Kamat government secured majority after three legislators
broke away from the opposition GDA and joined it.
