konkani lovers in delhi were disappointed when the only entry representing goa state for the annual national theatre festival (mar 16-april 8) was in hindi. 'bhagwadajjukiam' by the kala academy school of drama, goa was staged at 'sammukh' one of the theatres of the national school of drama (nsd), the organisors of the festival, on 7 april 02 at 7.30 pm. bhagwadajjukaim is a play written by an obscure classical indian poet called bodhayan (4-6 century). the plot steeped in indian mythology is about a pseudo sanyasi and the machinations of yama the god of death(with hilarious results). the hindi translation was by nc jain. one expects at national platforms like this goan culture be showcased. like the tiatro for example. padmashree josalkar the director, when queried backstage, held that play was anyway part of the students acting course and since no one had done bodhyan they decided to do it. the other play in konkani was 'too serious' she said. to me the play, albeit flawlessly performed, was more if not entirely in the spirit of yakshagana performance of kannada theatre. one fails to see why the goa entry should pander to the aspirations of a neighbouring state, thus being an apology for its own cultural and artistic heritage. that too when karnataka was represented by abhinaya taranga from bangalore and abhivykta, mangalore who both performed in kannada. perhaps ms josalkar has some answers coming as she does from the third generation of the Gubbi company, the theatre family of karnataka. she joined KA in 1987 as lecturer , western drama and was made director of the school of drama in 2001. a memorable moment for delhites was in march last year (2001) when rangmell of KA staged a tiatro- adaptation of brecht's 'three penny opera' entitled 'teen paisancho tiatr' why can't KA send more troupes? the same is true for the world book fairs. in both cases the state agencies fiddle while other states exert themsleves to their utmost to present their best quality. or should i be happy the play wasnt in kannada? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet =================================================================== For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails?
