The latest issue of Goa Today (April 2002) has Wendell Rodrigues (Style
Speak) come out very strongly in support of Parrikar.

Do not dismiss Wendell off as just a fashion guru who knows nothing about
politics. Wendell is a writer and a thinker too, with many achievements,
other than fashion, to his credit.

No long replies Uly. Just a few lines. I just have no time or inclination
for this goaworld-versus-goacom rivalry that has fuelled this animosity.
One don't have to defend oneself. I've helped a little to build GoaNews
(and, to a lesser extent, GoaNet). So have others: GoaNet founder Herman,
Joel, Eddie.... even you, at one stage. Anyone is welcome to help.
If you feel you can't use legitimate means to fight the intra-website
and/or mailing-list competition, tough luck!
I'm not going to oblige in getting caught up in a meaningless slugfest of
allegations. This is probably the last you'll hear from me on
this. Regardless of what charges, flame-baits that come up from the
handful of individuals (sometimes using dozens of different e-mail IDs).
If you want to damage GoaCom in any way, that's your problem. If you think
you can achieve this goal by attacking Joel and Fred, tough luck again.
Our own intercine battle is of no relevance, or interest, to readers out
there. They must be saying to themselves, 'Oh no, not that again. What a
bore!' If you choose to waste readers' time, that's fine. The real battle

BJP set for a return to Hindu chauvinist ideology

Panaji (Goa), Apr 13 (IANS) Four years after Prime Minister Atal Bihari
Vajpayee's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) eschewed Hindu radicalism to broaden
its appeal and seize power in New Delhi, it seems to be returning to its
hardline nationalist ideology known as Hindutva.
As top BJP leaders gathered here for a stock-taking session rejected calls
to sack Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the party made a U-turn on the
political line it adopted in 1998 when Vajpayee came to power at the head of
a multi-party coalition.
At that time, the BJP agreed to give up its pro-Hindu agenda so as to be
acceptable to many allies who did not share its Hindu supremacist ideology.
But the party's rejection of several allies' demand to replace Modi --
widely blamed for the sectarian violence in Gujarat since February-end --
virtually confirmed it had decided to put all its eggs in the Hindu
nationalist basket.
"Instead of accepting his resignation, the national executive advises him to
seek dissolution of the assembly, go to the people and seek their verdict,"
said the party resolution adopted late Friday.
"In a democracy there is only one way to put the issue, and the calumny, to
rest -- the people are the ultimate arbiters and so the people of Gujarat
are the ones who can and must decide."
Vajpayee himself indicated the radical shift in the BJP's stance in his
speech at a public rally here in which he attacked Islamic fundamentalism
and virtually justified the Gujarat backlash that has claimed nearly 830
lives.
Eight days after he told Muslim survivors in strife-torn Gujarat that he was
shamed by the violence, Vajpayee blamed the largely anti-Muslim carnage on
the torching of a train by suspected Muslims February 27 that killed 58
passengers, mostly supporters of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
"It is time for the party to return to Hindutva (Hindu nationalist
ideology)," top BJP leader and Human Resource Development Minister Murli
Manohar Joshi told reporters Saturday on the sidelines of the three-day BJP
meet that began a day earlier.
Joshi, considered to be next only to Vajpayee and Home Minister L.K. Advani
within the party, was voicing the sentiment of a large section that blames
the BJP's recent electoral reverses on a dilution of its Hindutva ideology.
The BJP was routed in four states February, losing power in three, including
the politically key state of Uttar Pradesh. In March it was trounced in
municipal elections in the national capital that it had ruled for five
years.
Its waning popularity, party leaders say, has plunged the BJP into a deep
identity crisis. The hardliners are upset that Vajpayee refused to allow the
VHP, a long-time BJP associate, to carry out religious ceremonies near the
site of the razed 16th-century Babri mosque at Ayodhya.
The last straw, insiders say, came when the opposition -- led by the
Congress party that has been winning state elections just as the BJP has
been losing them -- and some Vajpayee allies demanded Modi's removal.
The Hindu hardliners seem to have won the battle against voices of caution
led by Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Shanta Kumar
against returning to a communally divisive agenda.
Said former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma: "Whatever is happening
in Gujarat is not good for the party's image."
The BJP decision is immediately a challenge to its several allies, including
the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the biggest group propping Vajpayee.
They would now have to quickly decide whether to push the issue and risk the
fall of the Vajpayee government or backtrack and allow the BJP its way.

Vajpayee Betrays Nation in darkest day of Democracy
Goa speech encourages Fascist violence against Minorities
The speech of Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, Prime Minister of India and life long cadre of
the RSS, in the Goa session of the Bharatiya Janata party, marks the darkest day in
the history of democracy and rule of law in this land, All India Christian Council
President Dr Joseph D Souza and Secretary General Dr John Dayal have said in their
Press statement today.
The All India Christian Council condemns in the strongest terms the speech of the
Prime minister, and all its insinuations, as an invitation to mass violence and the
disintegration of the country.
The Christian Council statement adds: In cold-blooded cynicism, Vajpayee has in one
fell swoop defamed world religions Islam and Christianity, condoned state terrorism,
forgiven Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi (who is seen as a mass murderer by those
who have survived his pogrom, as well as by civil society), and sought to convert the
bigotry and hate campaigns of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Vishwa Hindu
Parishad into votes for the Bharatiya Janata party.
While this may come as a shock or a surprise to some of Mr Vajpayee's partners in the
ruling National Democratic Alliance coalition, the minorities and secular people of
India have always known that when it comes to the lust for power, Mr Vajpayee does not
hesitate a moment in shedding his mask or his pretense, to re-emerge as a violent
protagonist of Hindutva, at par with the Shiv Sena's Bal Thakarey or his own
colleagues Mr L K Advani, Mr Murli Manohar Joshi, RSS supremo Kupahalli Sudershan, and
their most ardent and faithful follower, Mr Narendra Modi.
Mr Vajpayee's speech pours salt and acid on the wounds of all victims of sectarian
violence, be they Muslims butchered in barbaric brutality by the police and the Sangh
Parivar in Ahmedabad, Baroda and the forests of northern Gujarat, Graham Stuart
Staines and Father Christu Raj who were murdered in Orissa, or the nuns raped in
Jhabua, later scene of a triumphant RSS rally.
He even insults the memory of the innocent dead of the train at Godhra. The gruesome
burning alive of 59 persons was universally condemned. To now rationalize, and thereby
encourage, retaliatory violence in its wake is to savagely criminalise civilisational
discourse in India.
This is fraught with danger. The actions of the Sangh Parivar have crippled the rule
of law, made fragile India's democratic polity, and fractured the unity of its plural
cultural heritage. The Prime Minister statements sharpen cleavages to the point of
rupture, posing a direct threat to India's unity and integrity. It is still not too
late for Mr Vajpayee's NDA partners to wake up and act decisively.
The final word is with the peace loving people of India. When elections are called in
Gujarat and the country, Mr Vajpayee will learn to his cost that the great Indian
people are capable of love, desire peace, are proud of their plural cultural heritage,
and
summarily reject Fascism. The people will show they do not want governments founded on
the blood of the innocent. This we believe.
