George - in view of the fact that all three MAJOR monotheistic religions began in the
same spot, I do
feel that Judaism and Christianity are as Eastern as Islam, and should be included if
Islam is being
included. They, too, straddle "the two broad classifications." Surely you could find
"very keen"
people wanting to speak on Christianity and Judaism as well?? Someone caved in to
political pressure.

I agree with Wendell. Unfortunately, as is normal in every election, people
vote on the basis of caste and religion. I pray Goans don't do that this
time at least. A five year opportunity should be provided to Parrikar
considering his progress over the last one year. If not, we will be making a
mockery of ourselves. But in a democracy they say we get the leaders we
deserve.

Pick up most Asian Philosophy textbooks (we are not talking religions only) and you
will find they
mirror the topics at the Asian Phil. conference. You will also find in our Phil.
Dept. that
Aquinas, Anselm, Augustine, Soren K., Leibniz, Spinoza, Kant et al and their Christian
views get
extensive coverage (especially in the Intro to Phil. classes which have a number of
students).
Let me remind you and readers that Philosophy and Religion are two separate
disciplines, this is
not a relegious conference. I agree that the three major religions began in the same
spot but
that has nothing to do with why it should be included/excluded in an Asian Philosophy
Conf. I
have already explained why Muslim Phil. was included.
Sorry, no Christian political pressure or polemic is going to change the agenda here
;-)

Yes, you already did, I agree.
1. Islam was not on the program because it didn't really belong there - if it did it
would have been
included from the beginning.

George, the agenda has ALREADY been changed by political pressure, hasn't it?
Apparently SOME
political pressure is accepted but A DIFFERENT political pressure is not. Shame on
CSUSJ for caving

Dear Viniana,
This will be my last email on the topic and I will let you have the last word if you
wish without
further reply.
I primarily organized the conference and can assure you no one pressured me one way or
the other.
This Christian political pressure is the first regarding the conference. Speakers
volunteered
their topics and they generally fell withing the theme of the conference.
Now I must attend to the fish lobby and their political pressures to change the lunch
menu from
chicken. I will possibly have to deal after that with the "round table and wooden
chair" lobby
since we are having rectangular tables and metal chairs at the conference. I was
informed this
morning that the conference is sold-out which means we will have to arrange the room
facing North
to accomadate everyone. This should bring the "room should face South lobby" out in
force.
