I do not want to get into a protracted discussion of Catholic theology,
since this D-list was not created to cater specifically to such needs.
Suffice to say, there are some errors that need to be clarified. The word
"catholic" does connote universality (from the Greek) and thus the phrase
"catholic church" typically refers to all Christian denominations (compare,
for instance, The Creed narrated by Lutherans and by Catholics during their
respective services). When the word Catholic is spelt with an upper case
"C", then it typically refers to the Roman Catholic Church (more
specifically, the Diocese of Rome, or the Holy See). Thus, we need not
blame/credit the Brits for this qualifier. :-)
Those of you interested may want to read the Jesuit, Richard McBrien's,
excellent tome on the subject of Catholic theology titled simply,
Catholicism (Harper Collins Publishers). It's an excellent read (very
engaging writing style, I assure you) to even the neophyte. Before
asserting any statements on what/how/why/who/... about Catholicism, it
behoves us to first become more informed of that what we seek to
criticize/analyze/evaluate/discard....! :-)

Pascoal:

The Telugu Desam Party's threat of withdrawal of support to the NDA
government cast a worrisome shadow over the concluding session of the
Bharatiya Janata Party's three-day national executive here, forcing its
early conclusion and a quick departure to Delhi by Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee and some senior members of his Cabinet.
Sources in the BJP said that Mr Vajpayee left for Delhi earlier than
scheduled, accompanied by Home Minister L K Advani, Parliamentary Affairs
Minister Pramod Mahajan, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and
Disinvestment Minister Arun Shourie. They said the prime minister spoke at
length to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister
Chandrababu Naidu from the Raj Bhavan here before taking his flight out.
After the TDP's stinging censure on Saturday of the BJP decision to allow
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to keep his job and go for an early
election, the BJP began to shore up its defences and look to alternatives t=
o
face yet another crisis from its coalition partners.
Sources here said they were in touch with other parties like the Bahujan
Samaj party (BSP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and also Tamil Nadu
Chief Minister Jayalalitha.
But the party maintained here that there was "no danger to the government",
and the prime minister made it categorically clear that he could prove his
strength if driven to the point. "We will prove our strength if need
be," Mr Vajpayee said here, after being asked if his government could
survive if the TDP decided to pull out. And Party President K Jana
Krishnamurthy said, similarly, that the BJP would accept whatever
decision the TDP takes today.
The BJP also remained firm all through that it would not budge on its
backing Mr Modi. "No question of going back on it," a senior minister said,
while Mr Krishnamurthy dismissed it as a closed chapter "disposed off on th=
e
first day itself".
Another BJP leader told this newspaper that the decision to dissolve the
Gujarat House had been taken three days ahead of the BJP national executive
that began here on Friday, and Law Minister Arun Jaitley had flown to
Gujarat mainly to discuss the legal angle with Mr Modi. With 28 MP's, Mr
Naidu's TDP, though not part of the government, forms the largest non-BJP
constituent of the NDA alliance which has a majority of 315 in the Lok
Sabha. The Trinamul Congress, which has also been asking for Mr Modi's
dismissal has 9 members.
"If the TDP decides to go, we still have a comfortable majority of 287," a
BJP leader pointed out. The BJP itself has 182 members in the Lower House.
Though some analysts here argued that a TDP pullout would mean a loss of
credibility for the BJP, the more hardline elements within the party were
making it clear it was time to discard the "secular charade" and go
fullscale with the party's Hindutva agenda.
One of them told this newspaper, "Now is the time for the party to harness
Modi's popularity in Gujarat and test its fallout in four or five other
states". He said Modi was confident of getting a three-fourth majority. "No
Muslim will dare come out to vote," he said.
In fact the tenor of the BJP national executive here =97 which started off =
on
the dramatic note of Mr Modi's farcical resignation offer and the party's
rejection of it =97 was one of a hardening of the ideological stance. It be=
gan
with Mr Vajpayee's hard-hitting public speech blaming Muslims for causing
disharmony the world over.
The tone was reinforced by Mr Advani's statement that the BJP need not be
"apologetic about the party's ideological moorings".
Such arguments, and the ruling party's justification of the Gujarat violenc=
e
as a natural corollary to Godhra and its use, as the TDP says, of an
"election to achieve blatantly narrow communal ends", left the impression
that the BJP was preparing to revive the saffron card if forced to a
mid-term election.

SCHOOL SOCCER � KUWAIT.
THE ENGLISH SCHOOL FAHAHEEL & CARMEL WIN.
In the first encounter at Sour Ground on Friday 13th of this month at 8.30
A.M. between The English School Fahaheel and Indian Community School
Kheitan, the former defeated the latter by a margin of 2-0. The first goal
was scored in the middle of first half by their hardworking forward Mohammad
Matar while the second goal was scored in the beginning of second half with
a beautiful shot taken from inside the box by their left winger Sean Moris.
Before the start of this match both the teams were introduced by the chief
coordinator of the tournament Fidelis Fernandes to Raymond D�sa � President
of Goa Maroons & Mr. B. M. Viegas � President of Chinchinnim Villagers
Associations and its Fott-ball Team Clube Recreativo. The match was
attended by a huge holiday crowd who came to cheer their favourites. The
English School Fahaheel played much better than their opponents. They
played good short pass game of course to the thrill of the spectators. On
the other hand Indian Community School Kheitan tried hard to forge ahead in
the beginning of the match but they could not penetrate the citadel of
Fahaheel. They were more erratic in passing and their defence was not very
stable to halt the onslaught of the Fahaheel. Mr. Eric Almeida refereed
this match while on the lines he was assisted by Gajendra Pillay & Tony
D�cruz.
As a matter of interest The English School Fahaheel is known to support the
soccer activities at Sour Ground since last few seasons and even this time
they have opted for their full cooperation.
In the second encounter at the same venue at 10.00 A. M. in a very
interesting match Carmel School with the backing of their supporters
defeated Indian Central School by 3-2. Downed by early two goals Carmel
School suddenly increased the pace of their tempo in the second half and put
heavy pressure on the defense of ICS who scored two goals in the first half
itself thru their forwards Brian Fernandes and Taha Ansari. Soon after
these goals it looked that they will easily carry the day with a bigger
margin but unexpectedly for many who attended this match Carmel School
utilized their reserve energy and scored three goals thru their energetic
forwards Antonio Lobo (1) and Kevin Mesquita (2). This match was refereered
by Joe and assited by Anthony Viegas and Peter Santimano. Earlier before
the start of this match both the teams were introduced by Mr. Fidelis
Fernandes to to Tony Dias � The president of Santos F.C., Agnelo Fernandes �
President Navelim Youth Centre & John � President of AVC Sports Club.
Next Friday Fixture: First match: Jabriya Indian School V/s Indian Central
School � 8.00 a.m.
Second Match: Indian Community School V/s Gufl Indian School-9.00 A.M.
INVASION OF GROUND.
Due to rain on Thursday night the ground where the above matches were to be
played turned watery preventing from conducting matches there. On the next
ground C.R.C. Chinchinnim were organising their tournament and both the
participating teams were ready to enter the field. Suddenly to the surprise
of everyone Colva United Centre group invaded the ground and prevented
Chinchinnim from conducting matches on that ground. Having no other option
the organizers and KIFF abandoned that day�s fixtures. Then the organizers
of School Tournament United Goans Centre took possession of the ground and
concluded both their matches. This was the third Friday that commotion is
taking place at that ground. On the politics of invasion of soccer field by
Goan Teams/Clubs you will have more to read in this forum later on.
