OLD WEDDING CUSTOMS CHUDDO
As in other parts of Bardez, April-May is the month of feasts and
weddings
in Saligao. I will dwell to-day on the Bangle - wearing Ceremony among
Christians and Hindus.
......................................................................
This is an all Goa custom -- nothing to do exclusively with Saligao
and Bardez.. Is prevailant in Salcette, even today.
cheers--Gilbert.

Herminator the Terminator has once again rise from his
long sleep. Praise be to that. It's nice to know that
his the "chairman" as in Chairman Mao.
He isn't happy that the Goacom vs Goaworld tit-for-tat
battle is fought on goanet.
May I ask why shouldn't it fought on this forum?
What's wrong with it. Goacom hosts goanet, and that's
a given fact. That both goacom and goanet are
autonomous is also a fact.
But the issue is what went in the background. The
goaworld team has alleged of some wrong tactics or
unethical methods in doing some things to affect
goaworld's image or work.
So, in this context raising the issue on this forum is
fair game. However, how long it should be played out
and to what length each one must be allowed to attack
or maling the other is a matter for the admin team to
decide.
Debates go on forever in some cases. It's for the
admin team to say enough is enough.
Herman's warning saya that those who want to split the
Goan community has no place on goanet. Does anyone
purposely want to split the goanet community? Hasn't
other mailing lists branched off goanet and even other
Goan discussion forums because some weren't
comfortable with goanet? What did the admin team do in
these cases?
I wish Chairman Mao keeps his warnings to himself and
goes back go sleep. In a way, thanks for waking up and
making your presence felt on goanet as I has forgotten
you still exists.

Thanks for those interesting responses :-)
I remember the dousing of onion juice on the head for colds or fever, and
coppa (or cupping) for stomach pain. The latter is used in modern medicine
for drawing blood toward or through the surface.
Although they may not be considered as home remedies, certain practices also
come to my mind.
There was this young son of a medical practitioner in Goa, who got surprise
visits from patients at their home when the father was out. They would bribe
him with candies, etc., just to stomp on their backs for his curative powers.
His was a breech presentation, and they didn't want the father to know
because he disapproved of it.
In Karachi, several friends and relatives visited our home for the very same
reason. I was asked to stroke their backs, etc., with my foot (which I did
whilst reciting a prayer) and they'd leave feeling instant relief from their
aches or pains :-)
I am curious if anyone has similar or other experiences and if there is any
ascribable reason for their relief. Santosh usually offers valuable insight
on such matters :-)
Best Wishes:
Pat de Sousa

Now that's a thought. Good idea ! Here are some more remedies I know :
1. If you get a rash or chicken pox, then have a bath with water which is
first boiled with neem leaves and cooled down.
2. Adding a slice of ginger to your tea will help keep colds away.
3. A clove of raw garlic (chopped fine and mixed with food) will get rid of
cholestrol problems. Also good for heart ailments
4. If your eyes have a burning sensation due to stress or too much sunlight,
then lie down for a while in a cool room, close your eyes and apply cotton
pads soaked with the solution given below to your eyes :
Boil water with a handful of coriander and cummin (jeera) seeds. Strain and
cool down.
No time to write the book, but if anybody is really interested in doing so,
Good Luck.
Cheers,
Sunila
P.S. Blooming, money minded, capitalist Americans. Now if they were smart
they would patent terrorism and then sue Bin Ladin and Pakistan for using it
! ;- )

Balcony View: The Waters magic
SANJAY BANERJEE, CYRIL D'CUNHA & R V PRABHUGAOKAR
TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 2002 11:30:07 PM ]
PANAJI: Roger Waters provided the perfect excuse for a quick weekend getaway
to Bangalore. Many of Goa's youthful crowd grabbed the opportunity and
boarded buses for the musical evening.
"Oh! It was great fun and memorable too," they gushed in unison, full of
Pink Floyd medleys, and even got into singing mode...``Another brick in the
wall... was simply great,'' they recalled of the song that captured the
rebellious mood of the youth once upon a time. Ditto this time as well.
With elections round the corner and familiar faces going to the poll, the
young, who revel in anti-establishment attitudes, simply want to forget
there is ever anything called an election. Why can't people simply be
straight, honest and good, they wonder, these throwbacks of the swinging
sixties.
Swifter chug from Bombay to Goa
Mumbai is just about seven hours run from Goa. The Jana Shatabdi, which
cruises at a high speed with fewer stops, has done the trick. With the new
train launched recently, there are now three trains to choose from. The
other two take about 11 hours, and never did pose a threat to buses that ply
the hilly tracks providing a vintage romantic feel of `Bombay to Goa'
journeys captured in numerous Hindi films.
The new train, though, has served the jitters and finally proved that it is
faster despite the sluggishness of the Railways known for its delays, giving
the organisation a constant bad image. The faster train has come in handy as
one can spend the evening in Mumbai, straight out from the train for it is
just when the evening sets in that the Jana Shatabdi posts its entry into
the bustling metro.
Varsity library keeps up with digital age
The Goa University library will establish a digital laboratory, in a
collaborative project on Universal Digital Library with Carnegie Mellon
University, Pittsburg, USA., wherein holdings will be scanned and made
available on CDs, with scanners provided by the University. The digital
laboratory will not only be available to store rare book collections in
digital form, but also help other organisations like Archives, Central
Libraries, etc.
The Goa University is also planning to establish an International Centre for
Research on Goan studies and put all holdings in digital form into it. Among
these will be two priceless collections, one, the Dr Nuno Gonsalves
Collection, which is a numismatic specialty and gifted to the University and
the other, the Pissurlekar Collection.
Meanwhile, an extramural research grant of Rs 1.75 lakh for five years from
the CSIR, headed by Goan Raghunath Mashelkar, has been received for an
integrated Ph.D programme in atmospheric and Ocean Development, which is one
of the emerging areas. Two students from the French department, Genny
Saviona Coutinho and Sandra de Menezes e Velho, have also been selected to
go to Paris, to teach English through French, to French students.
Yeh dil mang-o more!
This year, the Mankurado mango is far beyond the reach of the common Goan __
priced at Rs 25 per fruit, this variety found its way into the Panaji market
only last week, when the rate was a whopping Rs 100 per fruit.
Culprit: the weather. The crop was delayed this year, and weather conditions
were not conducive, say farmers. However, there is no scientific reason for
a poor mango yield.
In such circumstances, prices of this export variety will further increase.
In case of unseasonal rainfall, the fruit loses its original taste. Goa
receives rainfall from June onwards for about four months, till
September-end. During the monsoon, mango prices fall considerably and no
export is possible after this season. And once rain clouds gather this year,
horticulturists with mango orchards will suffer losses.
Traders in Panaji market feel the product could have been hoarded by
cultivators to get a better price, which is quite possible. Now Goans will
have to depend on Alphonso mangoes coming in from Konkan in Maharashtra.
Though Goa produces the Alphonso too, people naturally choose the Mankurado,
which is considered the season's delight and a perfect gift. This year,
family and friends staying far from the coastal state may not get their
parcels of joy.
