Thanks for sending this Fred.

Now that I have read the PM's speech in English (I had heard the audio in
Hindi before on one of the internet sites)I cannot understand why there was
such a furore about it in the first place. In fact, both the times (i.e.
when I heard it in audio and when I read the speech in English) I tried to
find the controversial passages but couldn't find any. If anyone of you can
find a single statement in the PM's speech which is provocative and untrue
please let me know. At least it will give me an insight into somebody else's
way of thinking.

In fact, since my Hindi is not too good :-) when I first heard it on audio I
did think that the part about Muslims could be construed as provocative to
some. But after reading it in English I have actually changed my mind about
that too.

I would think some of the things George Bush said and says are far more
provocative but nobody made a noise about them. I tell you our media is fast
turning into a bunch of liars. Shame on them for stoking flames about
nothing at a time when the country is facing such severe and nasty communal
turbulence !

Cheers,
Sunila

The last paragraph from Sunila suggests (I stand
corrected if I am wrong) that 'Fred Noronha and Co'
are NOT providing fair reporting. (Don't know what
"more balanced" means.......like..more better, I

In any event...I disagree.

Joel in his Goa News mostly reposts what summaries of
what the Goa Newspapers say while "Fred Noronha and
Co" are, in my opinion, pretty objective.

I wonder what makes the reporting from 'Fred Noronha
and Co' unbalanced. Perhaps, Sunila will care to
advise us.

And let us just cut the mustard and say Who are the
"majority community" . Hindus? Atheists, Harijans,
Dalits?...

By lopsided reporting, lopsided arguments, ignorance of many incidents.

>Is it possible that

Yes, of course.

On some counts, yes. But not all counts. That is where the imbalance comes
about.

Of course not ! After all it is not my job to let you know all that is going
on in this world and India in particular. I do send in a few messages when I
can find the time to do so like the last few days ;-) but generally I hardly
bother at times. But if you would like to take on this job, please go ahead.
You have my blessings ;-)

When I say the reporting needs to be more balanced I mean exactly that.
Let's not get into the crab mentality here. I am talking with a focus on
issues and not people. Fred Noronha was mentioned because he is our main
news reporter on this forum. I have no personal axes to grind with Fred. I
have met him and found him to be a nice quiet unassuming chap. And knowing
him, he will actually view my message with an open mind and possibly work
towards giving more balanced news reports.

>In any event...I disagree.
>
>Joel in his Goa News mostly reposts what summaries of

I accept your opinion. However I disagree.

>I wonder what makes the reporting from 'Fred Noronha
>and Co' unbalanced. Perhaps, Sunila will care to
>advise us.

If reporting (and by reporting I mean news and views here) was more balanced
we would have heard of Godhra before the revenge on Muslims took place. We
would have heard of the hundreds and thousands and hundreds of thousands of
Hindus being killed in Kashmir EVERY DAY in the name of religion. We would
have heard of the killings in the North East which force conversions and
hatred which occur EVERY DAY. We would have heard of the numerous deaths on
the caste issues in Bihar and UP which occur EVERYDAY! And we would have
heard more about the findings on the anti-Sikh riots which occurred a long
time ago. And we would have heard more about the elimination of Kashmiri
Buddists in the name of ethnic cleansing which occur EVERY DAY. And we would
have heard more about the 0.8 million Kashmiri Pandits who have been
displaced from their homes and who live in pitiable conditions EVERY DAY for
for the last ten years. And we would have heard about the Naxal bombings and
killings in Bihar and Andhra Pradesh for the last few years which occur
EVERY OTHER DAY. And we would have heard of the recent bombing in Punjab.
And etc.

Instead we heard a lot about the Christian missionary Staines...but not a
word about the one of the harshest punishments in the world meted out to a
minor aged 14 years for involvement in the crime when he was a couple of
years younger at least. A lot about sporadic incidents on Christians and the
church bombings. However, when it was finally discovered that the church
bombers were hired by the Pakistani ISI, silence reigned in this forum for
sometime until I sent in the news article. We heard and are hearing a lot
about the Muslims killed in Gujarat but zilch about the Hindus killed in
Godhra which triggered these riots in the first place. And of course we hear
a lot of rubbish which comes out from the likes of the VHP etc. But do not
hear a word about what the Imam of Jama Masjid said about the disintegration
of our nation. Need I say more ?

>And let us just cut the mustard and say Who are the
>"majority community" . Hindus? Atheists, Harijans,
>Dalits?...

Oh fine with me. I don't like mustard either. I am talking about the
non-Brahmin Hindu community which includes but is not limited to Harijans,
Dalits and Atheists.

Now let me repeat I have NO problem with reporting about atrocities on
minorities. In fact, I think that such reporting is most important in a
democracy. Besides I am interested in all news. But when the reporting is
ONLY limited to that it gives a lopsided view of my beautiful country, and I
don't like it. Besides it is untrue that only minorities are hurt in my
country. The majority community is the biggest sufferer and India is the
only country in the world where it's majority is trampled upon, exploited
and killed without anyone batting an eyelid. Let us also recognise that.

I do realise that this forum has a major lot of Christian voices, a single
Muslim voice and a couple of Hindu voices. I don't count myself in any of
these, of course, because although born a Hindu I married a Muslim and I
never did and never will believe in any religion and would not like to limit
myself to a particular community. And I also realise that most of the news
and views reported on this forum cater to the majority of the voices heard.
However, I still believe that lop sided reporting is sending an incorrect
view to the members of this forum about my country.

I would like more balanced reporting to allow more balanced views. After all
riots and communal violence occur due to hatred propagated via half truths
and untruths. Do you not agree ?

Cheers,
Sunila

P.S. I will rely on you to take my views with a balanced mind and not try to
shred it to start a wrangling match. ;-)
