Subject: [Goanet] Weather... and other issues in the month of May

Tim, It all depends on your body's heat-management system. Over the years,
mine has got pretty adjusted.

More than the high temperatures, it's the humidity that makes the Goa
weather what it is. Hence, there's little difference even in-shade
temperatures.

To keep cool, just shower down twice a day. Even a couple of jugs of water
(what with the water shortages, except in the hotels!) make a world of a
difference.

Somethings not thinking about the weather helps. Not that it changes the
reality, but it helps to extend one's tolerance to the reality.
Weather apart, this is a nice time of the year, as Daniel points out. The
ripening of such a wide variety of fruit (mangoes, jackfruit, kan'tta,
chu'nna, rose apples, and so much more) sort of compensates.

Calangute beach comes alive. So do others like Miramar. Each has a
different character. For a change, there are more locals than
tourists. You can't walk 50 metres without meeting someone you know... or
so it seems.

On another front, would anyone agree that the month-of-May Bomboicar
season has shrunken? (Incidentally, I think Peter Nazareth's fascinating
though-dated anthology of Goan writing has an essay on the
Bomboicar. Peter, what about an update by way of a new anthology?)

Looks like fewer Bomboicars are coming down, and they're less visible than
they once were in the month of May. Instead, a lot more expats now choose
December as the homing-time. In my younger days, Bomboicars and May went
hand-in-hand... at least in our parts of emigration-oriented Bardez.

Is Melissa bothering you, or the ILOVEYOU bug got into your system? Simply put, is
there a virus in your computer system and you don't know what to do? Or, would you
like a faster way of getting to your inbox on either Hotmail or Yahoo mail? If your
answer is yes, try logging on to www.goa4all.com.

This made-in-Calangute website has a special section on virus rescue and also takes
you instantly to a page allowing logon to both Hotmail and Yahoo mail. The same page
also has links to Rediffmail, Indiatimes mail and Goatelecom webmail.

Goa4all.com is designed and run by TotalWebSolutions, a company that specialises in
web site design. It's a free portal owned by Mr Vilanova Lobo, a young entrepreneur
from Calangute, who also runs another popular portal, GoaWorld.com.

Mr Lobo (popularly known as Vila) says that, ''When hit by a virus, we don't know what
to do and normally spend lots of money of technicians. Many problems can easily be
solved by following the simple steps provided on our website.''

Vila should know. Besides running 2 portals, he also runs the Arte D'Ouro chain of
cybercafes across Goa. His parent company, AdSoft Infotech deals in the marketing and
service of assembled/branded computers and computer peripherals.

Assisting Vila in his business are his 2 junior brothers. Vishal handles the cyber
cafe and the computers and peripherals showroom at Panjim called Digital World. And
Vian handles the cyber cafe at Porvorim. Vila names the website of Goan musician Remo
Fernandes as one of the prestigious sites his company has designed.

But coming back to the virus problem, the site www.goa4all.com/virlist.htm enlists
some of the recently discovered virii. Clicking the virus name unfolds all the
information about that particular virus and also offers a link on ''how to configure
Norton Anti-virus software to scan all files.'' Importantly, it also informs of ways
to remove the virus manually by editing the system registry. Editing the registry
involves removing the value the virus has added to the registry and great care needs
to be taken while doing this.

''We recommend that people create a back up copy of their registry just in case,''
cautions Vila. But the instructions are quite simple and one need not be a hard core
techie to understand them.

The information on the site is compiled from a number of sites including
the Symantec website of which the famous Norton anti-virus software is a product. The
site also offers a link to the Symantec website. Goa4all.com personnel are now
available on msn chat for free online consultations on virus related problems,
normally in the mornings. Their id is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The virus-rescue section apart, the portal also has a special facility for checking
mail quickly. ''Because of the large number of Hotmail and Yahoo mail users, getting
through to our inbox with our snail-paced internet speeds is a tedious task,'' says
Vila. So his team of web designers at TotalWebSolutions, incorporated a page on their
site which allows you to directly log on to Hotmail or Yahoo mail. The address is
www.goa4all.com/cybercafe. ''This is much faster since it is hosted locally,'' says
Vila. Besides offering links to Indian email websites (Goatelecom webmail included) on
the same page, it also provides a link to the Google Search Engine.

Subject: [Goanet] BJP PRESS RELEASE

Date: 1st May, 2002

Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar, while addressing a press meet at BJP
Office, informed about tentative schedule of senior party leaders in Goa
this month. Shri Gopinath Munde will be in Goa on 6th & 7th May and will
address five election meetings. He will visit again between 20th & 22nd of
May.

Smt. Sushama Swaraj will be in Goa from 10th to 12th May and will
address 5 to 6 election rallies. She will address a press meet also.

Also, visits are planned for Shri Advani and Shri Arun Jaitley, Shri
Pramod Mahajan, being incharge of Goa Election, will camp in Goa in last
week of May.

Chief Minister further informed that he had visited 9 constituencies and
addressed 5 public meetings in last 8 days. Though at short notice, many
of the meetings had tremendous response.

As an indication of enthusiasm of party sympathizers, he stated that the
official website of the State www.goabjp.com received more than 1,35,000
hits in first eight days and in an envious reaction, the site was hacked
by opposition. There were more than 300 e-mails per day from Goans in Goa
and abroad. They were mostly from Christians and more than 90% were
supportive of him and his government. This was an indication that the
vilification campaign will increase in near future.

Talking about the Manifesto, he informed that Manifesto Committee will be
set up in a day or two and the full document will be delivered by 15th of
May.

Some of the highlights will be a critical appraisal of the performance of
BJP government in light of the promises made. There will be a full
explanation for the fulfillment of the promises.

Key issues of the Manifesto will be freedom from hunger in first 18
months. The DSS Scheme has benefited more than 13000 citizens and another
15 to 20 thousand citizens will be covered in that period. Another
important issue will be freedom from unemployment. Government will have a
set plan to provide gainful employment to all by the end of third year.
Thereafter, the government will provide unemployment allowance to all the
eligible unemployed persons in Goa.

Earlier Congress government had promised home and job for all by 2000.
Where is the promise and where are the promises ?

He declared that there will be a special cell in his office to monitor
such self-help schemes. Currently there are around 20 thousand unemployed
and equal number of under-employed persons in Goa and he promised to
provide respectful employment to all by end of third year.

Subject: [Goanet] CANDIDATES BE AWARE!

Today's very significant judgement by the Supreme Court of India may dampen
the spirits of most candidates aspiring to contest the May 30th Goa Assembly
elections.

The Supreme Court today upheld a petition that makes it mandatory for all
candidates standing for elections to any elected body to disclose their
assets.

This directive of the Supreme Court would have far reaching consequences on
the way elections are contested in our country and also affect those who
contest them.

The Supreme Court ruled that the voters have a fundamental right to
know about the criminal background of a candidate. It has directed the
Election Commission to issue necessary orders making it mandatory for
candidates to declare cases pending against them as well as their assets and
liabilities.

A three-judge Bench comprising Justice M B Shah, Justice B P Singh and
Justice H K Sema agreed that the candidates should also declare their
educational qualification.

So the mad rush for party tickets may ease and some sanity may be brought to
the whole electoral process. Now the nomination papers would have to be
accompanied by the candidates list of assets and the history of criminal
record if any. All this information would be in Public Domain.

We could now see some candidates rushing to the Chartered Accountants
fudging and fiddling the figures. Some may land at the Intensive Care Unit.
Have no mercy!
