GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS
13 May 2002

UNION MINISTER SHRIPAD NAIK RESIGNS, FILES NOMINATION FOR PONDA SEAT: In a
dramatic move, Shripad Naik resigned from his post as Union Minister for
Shipping and filed his nomination papers as the BJP candidate for the Ponda
seat. Shripad Naik will lock horns with former Dy Chief Minister Ravi Naik,
who recently resigned from the BJP caretaker government in Goa and is
contesting from Ponda on a Congress Party ticket. (GoaNOW)

YOUTH FEARED DROWNED OFF AROSSIM: A 20-year-old youth, Treddy Sequeira from
Porvorim, went missing while two of his companions were saved from being
drowned in the sea off Arossim on Sunday evening. Sequeira alongwith
Charles and John Paul, both from Mala-Panjim, had gone for a swim at
Arossim beach. (H)

DOCTORS REQUIRED TO DISPLAY FEES: Nowthere could be a board on your
doctor's door displaying his fee that would radically redefine the
doctor-patient relationship all over the country, as the Medical Council of
India issued the new guidelines that would make the life easier for users
of health services. (H)

GERMAN AMBASSADOR HAILS GOAN CULTURE: While addressing a dinner hosted by
him at Goa Marriott Resort, Heimo Richter, Ambassador of the Federal
Republic of Germany, was full of praise for the unique cultural and
touristic ambience prevailing in Goa. Europe itself represented a synthesis
of diverse cultures. Such traditions need to be preserved, he added. Both
the Naiks hail from the Bhandari Samaj, which constitutes a huge vote bank
in Goa. (GT)

INSTABILITY HAS BROUGHT BAD NAME FOR GOA, SAYS SUSHMA: Union Minister of
Information and Broadcasting, Sushma Swaraj on Sunday said that stability
in this tiny tourist destination is desperately needed for good governance.
"The first casualties of instability are development and good governance." (H)

RALLY WITH A DIFFERENCE: On April 28, people from Verna were literally
scandalized to see a group of youngsters, teachers and parents accompanied
by their parish priest and the principal of Rosary College, carrying
placards and banners and shouting slogans from the serpentine village
roads. This was indeed a different type of procession wending through four
kms of interior Verna, canvassing in favour of "Education for all", in
connection with the Global Action Week for Education. (NT)

DECISION TO SAVE DOG PROVES COSTLY: The Trax jeep, driven by Paul Vashul of
Manipur but residing at Calangute, was proceeding from Panjim to Mapusa
when the driver noticed a dog crossing the road. In a bid to save the
animal, the driver slammed the brakes but lost control of the vehicle,
which rammed into a stationary car. (H)

REBELS STAGE REVOLT: So far as Mandrem was concerned, state unit president
Laxmikant Parsenkar himself had raised the banner of revolt and had
threatened the party leadership that he would not hesitate to quit the
party and contest as an independent, if Khalap was given the ticket. (Edit
in GT)

WATER SHORTAGE: From a study undertaken by concerned villagers, it was
noted that an estimated 400,000 litres of water are being sold each day
from some nine wells from Saligao village alone. Goa recently passed a
groundwater protection law, which however is still to be effectively
implemented. (Frederick Noronha in Herald)

GOANET ACHIEVING SOME UNEXPECTED GOALS: Nearly eight years after it started
as a teenager's (Herman Carneiro) idea of coping with the loneliness of a
new country, an Internet-based simple e-mail networkGoanetis linking a few
thousand Goans worldwideand achieving some unexpected goalsGoaNet-UK is a
once-a-week tightly edited selection of news meant primarily for Goans n
the UK. Goanews is a news-summaries only mailing list. All come across free
to the reader. (H)

SENSITISATION COURSE FOR POLICE: A sensitization course for all police
officers of the rank of PIs and above was held in the Police Head Quarters
Conference Head Quarters, Panjim, on Saturday. (H)

ABOUT SIOLIM-CHOPDEM BRIDGE: The work of completing the Siolim-Chopdem
bridge over the Chapora river is going on at breakneck speed these days.
Apparently, the long pending bridge may eventually be completed and
inaugurated before the Assembly elections. (GoaNOW)

VECHNUK PRACHAR (ELECTION PROPAGANDA) BEGINS IN GOA: Long motorcades
bearing flags and banners of Congress Party and NCP were seen in Mapusa and
Panjim in the morning today, the last day for filing nomination papers for
the assembly elections. In Panjim, former Taleigao MLA Somnath Zuwarkar's
supporters had even included the romot (traditional drums used for Shigmo)
on one of the vehicles of the motorcade. (GoaNOW)

GOA LOOKING FOR: Nehru once said, if good people don't enter politics they
should be prepared to be governed by bad people. The assembly elections are
round the corner and once again we have a choice to elect good candidates.
Buy then are there really any good people in the race? So be prepared for
another (round of) bad governance. (Dr Pradeep V Kamat in NT)
