OPTIMIST NATIONAL SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP 2002

Rohith's slip gives Chaitanya Silver

DONA PAULA, GOA: A costly slip on the downwind leg of the loop caused Tamil
Nadu=92s Rohith Ashok=92s boat to get swamped, slowing him down in Race 6 o=
f a
regatta that continued to be dominated by Goa=92s Salil Sabir. Goa=92s Chai=
tanya
Chowgule took full advantage to pass him and come second in a race for the
first time in the championship. Another beneficiary, entering the medal
tally for the first time, was Vishal D'Silva of Mumbai's Sea Cadet Corps
(SCC), who stood fourth overall and third among boys in Race 6.

Race 5, sailed in the morning in slightly less hostile conditions than
yesterday, saw Shilpa Oberoi being pushed to fourth place by some aggressiv=
e
sailing from Tamil Nadu's Abhimanyu Nityanand, giving TN a second and
third finish.

The races were shifted to the morning today, in the hope of milder
conditions, but there was little respite from the wind and waves.
Consequently, after Race 5, the course was shortened and the time limit for
finishing increased to 20 minutes after the first finishing boat. From Race
7, it has been further extended to 30 minutes, to give more sailors an
opportunity to finish in view of the hostile conditions.

However, sometimes children can rise above all odds. An example is the team
of three sailors from Secundrabad, who usually sail in the placid waters of
the Husseinsagar lake in Andhra Pradesh=92s capital city. Navin Shirodkar, =
G
Rohith Mohan and Shruti Challani have never seen large waves on their home
waters, but are doing surprisingly well here. Says Rohit: =93It is the wave=
s
that are hard to get used to, but we are learning fast.=94 Team Coach Anil
Shirodkar is confident that in time, his wards will be able to take on
anybody. Rohit has come eighth in Races 1 and 2 and seventh in Race 4. Navi=
n
=92s best effort is an eighth place in Race 6. Shruti has won two silver
medals, her best being 12th place in Race 4. This is only their second
coastal regatta, and they seem set for bigger successes in future.

Race 7 will now be sailed tomorrow at 9 am, and Race 8 for 2 pm. The award
ceremony was held in the evening at the regatta site. Flag Officer Goa Area
Rear Admiral Sunil K Damle was the chief guest and gave away medals to the
winners.

Finish Positions: Race 5: (1) Salil Sabir (Goa), (2) Rohith Ashok (TN), (3)
Abhimanyu Nityanand (TN), (4) Shilpa Oberoi (SCC, Mumbai), (5) Chaitanya
Chowgule (Goa), (6) Ritesh Kank (SCC, Mumbai), (7) Vishal D=92Silva (SCC,
Mumbai), (8) Advait Deodhar (NSC, Mumbai), (9) Prasad Shelar (SCC, Mumbai),
(10) Kabir Tombat (Goa).

Race 6: (1) Salil Sabir (Goa), (2) Chaitanya Chowgule (Goa), (3) Shilpa
Oberoi (SCC, Mumbai), (4) Vishal D=92Silva (SCC, Mumbai), (5) Rohith Ashok
(TN), (6) Neil Maheshwari (NSC, Mumbai), (7) Rahul Malaney (RBYC Mumbai),
(8) Navin Shirodkar (EME, Secundrabad), (9) Mansoor Hamza (TN), (10) Kabir
Tombat (Goa).

Overall Positions: (1) Salil Sabir (Goa), (2) Rohith Ashok (TN), (3)
Chaitanya Chowgule (Goa), (4) Shilpa Oberoi (SCC, Mumbai), (5) Prasad Shela=
r
(SCC, Mumbai), (6) Ritesh Kank (SCC, Mumbai), (7) Kabir Tombat (Goa) (8)
Rahul Malaney (RBYC, Mumbai), (9) Abhimanyu Nityanand (TN) (10) Abhishek
Mhatre (SCC, Mumbai).

9.=0A>=0A>The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, virtually disowned the=
pro-Hitler views expressed by "guruji" M.S. Golwalkar, a former `sarsanghc=
halak' of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, in the Rajya Sabha on May 6, but=
did not explain why in almost every office of the Bharatiya Janata Party, =
and now, in several ministerial offices at the Centre (including Parliament=
House), his portraits hang alongside those of Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambe=
dkar. After all, German Government offices today surely do not hang portrai=
ts of Hitler nor does the BJP decorate its offices with pictures of Osama b=
in Laden.=0A>=0A> The fact is that both Mr. Vajpayee and the Union Home Mi=
nister, L.K. Advani, grew up at the feet of "guruji" who is still revered a=
s the most influential of all RSS heads who gave the organisation =97 and t=
he BJP, the political arm of the RSS =97 its so-called "ideological'' moori=
ngs and formed the young minds of Mr. Vajpayee and Mr. Advani during their =
impressionable years.=0A>=0A> Mr. Vajpayee dismissed Golwalkar's openly fa=
scist views as "his own (`)'' and added that the BJP had "nothing to do wit=
h the book (`)'' and that his party "had never given its stamp of approval =
(`')'' to those views. But he did not say when and where had the BJP (or th=
e Jan Sangh) distanced itself formally from the views of Golwalkar.=0A>=0A>=
The question that needs to be asked loudly is why it has taken Mr. Vajpay=
ee all of 60 years to distance his party from what Golwalkar had said? Why =
is it that in spite of his criminally obnoxious views he is revered by the =
Sangh Parivar and considered to be the guru of all gurus? In fact, contrary=
to what Mr. Vajpayee said, the BJP has so far never repudiated Golwalkar's=
views, let alone denounce them.=0A>=0A> A close look at Golwakar and a co=
mparison with what the RSS, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal a=
re saying almost everyday establishes the fact that the views of the Sangh =
Parivar are no different from those of Golwalkar.=0A>=0A> And this is what=
"guruji'' had to say in `We on Our Nationhood Defined': "To keep up the pu=
rity of the race and its culture, Germany shocked the world by her purging =
the country of the semitic races =97 the Jews. Race pride at its highest ha=
s been manifested here...a good lesson for us in Hindusthan to learn and pr=
ofit by.'' The Sangh Parivar insists that all Hindus are of Aryan origin, a=
nd denounces historians who suggest that Aryans came from Central Asia at a=
later date to push the Dravidians to the South.=0A>=0A> His "formula'' fo=
r nationhood was "five unities'' =97 geographical (a common country), racia=
l (all people belonging to one race), religious (all `nationals' must follo=
w the same faith), cultural (the same culture) and linguistic (a common lan=
guage). And he admitted that in India the "knotty problem'' was religion an=
d language. The "language" problem was resolved by (falsely) suggesting tha=
t there was a unity since all Indian languages were derived from a common r=
oot language =97 Sanskrit. Golwalkar's views on the "five unities'' perhaps=
explains the old Jan Sangh slogan, "Hindi, Hindu, Hindusthan".=0A>=0A> Th=
e only problem left, according to Golwalkar, was that of the religious mino=
rities. The answer to the question why the Sangh Parivar activists even tod=
ay see themselves as the only true "nationalists'' and look upon Christians=
and Muslims as "traitors'' can also be found in Golwalkar.=0A>=0A> This i=
s what he said: "in Hindusthan, the land of the Hindus, lives and should li=
ve the Hindu nation...only those movements are truly `national' as aim at r=
e-building and emancipating from its present stupor the Hindu nation...All =
others are either traitors and enemies to the national cause...''=0A>=0A> =
And finally, here was Golwalkar's solution to the minorities problem: the "=
foreign elements'' (Christians and Muslims) may "live at the mercy'' of the=
"national race (Aryan Hindus) as long as the national race may allow them =
to do so and to quit the country at the sweet will of the national race. Th=
at is the only sound view on the minorities' problem. That is the only logi=
cal and correct solution.''=0A>=0A> The frightening thing is that this is =
exactly what has happened in Gujarat =97 the minorities have been told that=
there is no place for them there and that they are free to go to Pakistan.=
=0A>=0A> Even in Parliament, when Muslim MPs get up to speak, the BJP back=
benchers are often heard saying "go to Pakistan''.=0A>=0A>Copyright: 1995 -=

33 die in gruesome Kashmir massacre (THIRDLEAD)

By H. Joshi, Indo-Asian News Service

Jammu, May 14 (IANS) Terrorists dressed in military fatigues Tuesday shot
dead children and wives of Indian soldiers even as the victims begged for
mercy in a gruesome massacre that left 33 people, including the three
attackers, dead in Jammu and Kashmir.

A sombre Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah blamed Pakistan-backed guerrillas
for the brutal killings and said the death toll - in what is undoubtedly one
of the worst acts of terrorism in the Himalayan state - could be much more.

About 40 people were injured, and many were reported to be in critical
condition.

"We normally don't stop on the highway," said Satish Sharma, the conductor
of the bus and who survived the massacre. "But when we saw men in uniforms
flagging us down, we stopped. Little did we realise what was in store for
us."

The nationality of the killers was not immediately known, but the
pro-Pakistan Jamiat-ul Mujahideen and the unknown Al-Manzooria claimed
responsibility for the "suicide operation".

In a statement to a news agency in Srinagar, the groups identified the three
terrorists who died in the attack as Abu Marsad, Abu Jaffer and Abu Sheal.
Indian officials said all three were in their early 20s.

The orgy of violence began early in the day when three gunmen, dressed in
military fatigues, boarded a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims from the hill state
of Himachal Pradesh at a small township near the Pakistan border.

About 10 km from Jammu, the state's Hindu-majority winter capital, the
gunmen unleashed a terrible fury, indiscriminately opening fire at the
passengers. They also lobbed grenades on those who tried to escape the
deadly attack.

"Most of the passengers were sleeping when they stopped the bus. They first
asked the passengers to get up and then started shooting indiscriminately,"
Sharma said.

"They first shot the driver and then opened fire on the passengers who ran
about in panic to escape the bullets," added Sharma.

At least seven passengers were killed instantly and several injured. The bus
was covered in blood and riddled with bullet marks.

The killers then ran into a sprawling residential complex housing the
families of Indian troops along a highway and forced their way into several
homes, firing away wildly. Three soldiers guarding the complex were among
the first to die.

One of the militants quickly fired some of the house with detonators and
explosives.

"They have killed innocent people," Abdullah lamented before leaving for the
massacre site.

Military officials said as the sound of firing and detonations began,
soldiers from a military complex across the highway ran into the residential
quarters and engaged the terrorists, killing all three men after about four
hours of fierce fighting.

As the soldiers began closing in, residents of nearby area kept them
supplied with drinking water.

But by the time the terrorists were gunned down, police sources told IANS,
they had displayed unprecedented cruelty.

Many of the victims were children who were asleep in their beds. In some
instances, their mothers begged for mercy from the killers but were mowed
down. A few women survived by hiding under the cots.

"It is one of the worst setbacks for the army in Kashmir," a police officer
said.

The gruesome killings took place hours after U.S. Assistant Secretary of
State for South Asian Affairs Christina Rocca flew into New Delhi for talks
with Indian leaders on the situation in the region. She is also expected to
discuss Jammu and Kashmir.

"I hope (External Affairs Minister) Jaswant Singh will make it clear to the
U.S. that we are not ready to accept this terrorism any longer. Pakistan
wants us to pull back from the border but what do we have in hand? If
Pakistan wants India to talk, it must end cross-border terrorism. Rocca must
carry this message to Islamabad," Abdullah said.

Said Kashmir governor G.C. Saxena: "This is a crime against humanity. It is
a pure act of terrorism."

This is the first time terrorists have targeted an army camp close to Jammu,
a Hindu-dominated city.

The last massacre in Jammu and Kashmir took place May 3 when terrorists
gunned down four Muslim and one Hindu civilians in the mountainous district
of Doda.

The latest terror attack also comes amid growing dissensions within militant
ranks in Jammu and Kashmir, where a bloody separatist drive raging since
1989 has claimed around 30,000 lives. India accuses Pakistan, which disputes
Kashmir's ownership, of arming and training the guerrillas and of pushing
into India scores of foreign mercenaries, mostly Pakistanis and Afghans.
