thanks eddie for your inputs. of course, the story was filed last month.
however, the fact remains that the library is still devoid of a computer. it
is still uncertain how long would it take for the proposed digital library
to become a reality.
it is unfortunate that the highly literate state had to wait for the central
government to take initiative for modernising the state library.

Subject: Re: [Goanet] Kashmir killings
The police, the government, are but a reflection of the society they live
in. Gujarat is not the first time that rioteers have been treated with
inaction or even helped by the police & the Govt. During the Sikh riots
after Indira Gandhi's death, Union Ministers from the Congress were publicly
on the street inciting rioteers and pointing out Sikh localities, houses and
women and children. And similarly during the Bhiwandi riots the police were
accused of ignoring the plights of the Muslims and even helping the
rioteers. And this happens not only in India but in so many countries. For
example even the judiciary and the police in the US are accused of color
prejudice in their actions. For that matter even George Bush, the President
of America is guilty of conniving with his brother to disallow black voters
in Florida.
When society will change, then will the police, government and politicians
change. Otherwise it will happen time and again. Yes it is wrong but not to
the people who do it at that time. That is why they do it
usually.....because they believe it to be right.
And there is no real difference between the psyche of those who killed
Staines, the passengers in the train at Godhra and the people who were
killed in some other parts of Gujarat later or the barbarism in Kashmir.
They are all motivated by hatred. Hatred born of differences.
When differences among people are treated as colossal like the beliefs and
allegiances to various religions, racial/color prejudices, etc., some people
will use such beliefs to incite people against each other and history
repeats itself with violence and murder and rape and plunder. The key is to
let the walls fall and to get rid of any new walls that are being built.
Organised religion currently has become a monster just like caste or color
had become a while ago (and still is in some parts of the world). It's time
for the walls built by orgnaised religion to be broken down so that we have
some peace in this world.
Cheers,
Sunila

Dear Sunila,
You write:
"Gujarat is not the first time that rioteers have been

death, Union Ministers from the Congress were publicly

I agree with you: wherever governments and the police
abet murder, citizens should raise a hue and cry.
Certainly so with the Gujarat reaction to Godhra.
Those who are not against such murderous failure of
government are for it. I think you are against such
failure of government, in which case I agree strongly
with you.
You also write: "It's time for the walls built by
orgnaised religion to be broken down so that we have
some peace in this world."
That statement can be tested against the evidence. The
following "Top 15" table of estimated unnatural deaths
is compiled by Mathew White, from extensive sources
listed at his website.
Death Toll Cause
50 million Second World War
47 million Mao Zedong
40 million Mongol Conquests
25 million Manchu Conquest
20 million Taiping Rebellion
20 million Anihilation of the American Indians
20 million Iosif Stalin
18 million Atlantic Slave Trade
17 million Timur
15 million First World War
9 million Russian Civil War
9 million Thuggee
7 million Thirty Years War
5 million Congo Free State
3 million Chinese Civil War
I cannot decide, on the basis of this evidence,
whether the presence or absence of organized religion
is associated with large-scale violence and death. My
neighbour, an elderly Christian widow, is quite fond
of organized religion: I shall not dissuade her just
yet.
Regards,
Joel Almeida

Stars of the Konkanni Stage : Ms. Janet Nunes e Almeida.
- ------------------------------------------------------------
By Wellington Dias.
==================================================================
During a brief chat with Janet (married to Philip Almeida from
Navelim-Mandopa) during her recent visit to Kuwait (to act in Rafael de
Majordas drama Hanv Nokho Zalom, in April, 2002), She, at first, profiled
her career, initially, acting in School, thereafter, in Menin de Bandars
khells and first acting professionally in Peter de Benaulims drama Ghulam
in the main role.
Being requested to play a comedy role in her forthcoming drama, Janet
mentioned that She was quite well accepted in this role, thereby, prompting
her to stick to comedy roles but stated that She can play any type of role.
Janet had to say that the Goan people in Kuwait may not recognize her, but
stated that her voice would surely be recognized by many, on account of it
being heard on various audio tapes.
Acting in more than 20-dramas to date of various directors, which include
Menin de Bandar, Peter de Benaulim, C. DSilva, Wilmix Sharon, Roseferns,
Joe Rose, Meena, Philip Almeida, Patrick Dourado, Mario de Vasco, etc.,
Janet singled out her performance in Roseferns drama Gundda as her best,
due to it being her maiden performance in a comedy role and also being well
accepted by the audience in the same.
She mentioned about her acting at Kala Academys tiatr competition and
presently acting in Mario de Vascos drama Hanv Tuka Bhas Dita.
About her future plans, She mentioned about wanting to blend her own path to
success and someday emulate her idol, Platilda Dias.
