"Xacutti (pronounced sha-KOO-tee)" reminded me of an article published in
Air India magazine Namaskaar , issue May-June 1999, "The Flavour of
Coconuts". One of the paragraphs says " In Mangalore and Goa, located along
the western side of the coast, there are many recipes that use coconuts
extensively: The Goan Caldine (a yellow fish curry) and Executie (a chicken
preparation) and the Mangalorean Vellapam ( a type of pancake)" . Executie
indeed! The writer must have got the information on Xacutti over the phone
and phonetically it must have sounded to him or her (sorry I can never
tell) as E x e c u t i e and did not take the least trouble to get the
correct spelling.
One more example of "malcuradas", "malcoradas" and "mankurads". I think it
is high time we started calling our "xacuti" "Executie" to get rid of one
more influence of Portuguese Colonialism although I think the dish is very
Goan as Mr. John d'Souza says and nothing to do with the Portuguese except
that we, the Portuguese I mean, do see it wrtitten as "chacuti"
Incidentally the name of the writer of the mentioned article is Shona
Adhikari. Were I to hear that surname over the phone then I might have got
it as "adli coddi" and might have thought it to be "kalchi coddi"!!!!!
By the way I was told that "in illo tempore" Xacuti used to be prepared
only of game meat, and it was always the men who prepared it after returning
from hunting. The name derived from "Xac Ku Tic" or "Xaque Ku Tik" ,
meaning
that the dish is very spicy.
Another information that I got is that some people call the game meat
itself "xacuti" specially the people from Molcornem, Rivona, etc. I
remember a Hindu woman bringing some meat and saying to a lady "Bhai tuka
toddi Xacuti haddlea hanvem".

OPTIMIST NATIONAL SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP =AD2002
Goa's Salil is national champ
DONA PAULA, GOA: Goa=92s Salil Sabir won both races today to emerge national
champion in the Optimist Sailing National Regatta, which ended here today.
But the hero of the day was young Xerxes Bamboat of the Bombay Sailing
Association (BSA), who powered his way to the front in Race 9, to take third
position and claim his maiden medal. Xerxes is just 10 years old and, being
small and light, was unable to fight the strong winds and seas which marked
many races. Today, he vindicated his abilities in Race 9.
Race 10 saw the usual line up at the finish line, except that Shilpa Oberoi
slipped to eighth place. The spectator boat was filled to capacity, as many
turned out to cheer their favourites. Hawaii Beach was gaily decorated for
the prize distribution ceremony, at which Lt Gen V K Dua, President of the
National Optimist Association of India (NOAI), was the chief guest, and gave
away the Tolani Trophy to national champion Salil Sabir. The Chowgule Trophy
for sailors under 12 went to Goa=92s Chaitanya Chowgule. The under-12
runner-up was Viraf Heerjee of Royal Bombay Yacht Club (RBYC), Mumbai.
Shilpa Oberoi of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) Mumbai, won the girls=92
championship trophy.
The championship was hosted by Dolphin Adventure Sports at Hawaii beach,
where the Goa Yachting Association (GYA) operates from and which is one of
the finest sailing sites in the country, with a safe and protected launching
area for boats, excellent shore facilities, fabulous sailing waters in the
Zuari bay and complete infrastructure. Visiting teams were highly
appreciative of the site. The only thing the place lacks is an adequate
approach road, a result of some ongoing litigation, because of which no
goods vehicles can approach the site. If the proposed road is cleared, it
would place Goa very prominently on the yachting map of India.
Finish Positions: Race 9: (1) Salil Sabir (Goa), (2) Rohith Ashok (TN), (3)
Xerxes Bamboat (BSA, Mumbai), (4) Ritesh Kank (SCC, Mumbai), (5) Moksh Jani

(8) Shilpa Oberoi (SCC, Mumbai), (9) Abhimanyu Nityanand (TN), (10) Kabir
Tombat (Goa).
Overall Positions (Final): (1) Salil Sabir (Goa) =AD 8 pts, (2) Rohith Ashok

On the basis of this evidence, I can certainly decide that the
presence of organized religion has contributed to at least 16 million
deaths. The blame for 7 million deaths due to the Thirty Years war and
for the 9 million due to Thuggee can be placed squarely on religion.
The Thirty Years War was a religious war between the Catholics and the
Protestants, fought from 1618 through 1648. It was launched by the
Roman Emperor Ferdinand II against Protestantism. Some estimates of
the death toll in this war run as high as 14 million. The population
of Germany was reduced to one third of its original level at the end
of the war.
Thuggee was and is still practiced in India in the name of the Hindu
goddess Kali. Victims of thuggee are believed to be human sacrifices
to this goddess. The killing done in accordance with the proper
religious ritual involves strangling a traveller to death, and
stealing his/her belongings.
Having said that, I do not believe we should get rid of religions,
despite all the horrible things that happen in their name, because
they are also responsible for a lot of good. I only feel that we
should reform them, and rethink what they stand for in the modern
society. But like Sunila, I would most definitely want to get rid of
all religious barriers between people. I am particularly troubled that
even in this day and age all major religions and religious regimes
continue to restrict our freedom of thought and expression.
Cheers,
Santosh
