Police to start confidence building drive with public.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Deputy Inspector General of police (DIG), Mr Karnal Singh,
stated that Goa Police would soon be starting a confidence
building mechanism with the members of the public.
Mr Karnal said this exercise would help in reducing
the police-public phobia which is prevailing particularly
in the minds of the common man and others at large.

He said in order put this new feature into practice,
a special beat has been started wherein policemen
would be asked to meet certain people in the area and
collect their grievances in writing and feedback action
would be initiated as per the written complaint.

He said there was a blanket ban of sort for years together
as far as promotions were concerned.
He said "we have recruited over 800 constables and filled posts of PSIs
which were kept pending for a very long time,
besides recruiting drivers' posts which were also pending
for several years to be filled. Drivers have been recruited on ad hoc
basis after recruitment rules were finalised
and confirmation was under consideration.

Apart from this, there were some old buildings
which needed urgent attention since 1991,
so after money was sanctioned, work was taken up on war footing.
This was the major problem faced by most police family members.

He said, presently, there are 12 PCRs to attend to public calls,
two each for Panaji, Margao and Mapusa,
whereas Old Goa, Colva and Ponda have one each.
This has facilitated them in reaching the spot of the crime in a jiffy.
He said there is a sizable decline in the crime rate as compared
to the figures of crimes committed and detected in the previous years.

He also promised to bring down the crime rate further in future
as the new recruits would consume little time in providing qualitative
detection.
Meanwhile, he also said there is a sharp rise in the cheating cases
as compared to the figures of last year.
He revealed that there are still 38 posts of PSIs to be filled.
