PRESS RELEASE
'HEY RAM" SCREENED - NO BAN ON THE FILM
The controversial 'banned' film allegedly proscribed by the State's Chief
Electoral Officer Arvind Ray was today screened at the Multi-Purpose Hall
next to the Women Police Station at Old GMC Complex at Panaji by Bailancho
Saad.
The Saad spokesperson Sabina Martins stated that this was done after it
became clear that no written order, instructions or gazette notification has
been issued by the Chief Electoral Officer prohibiting the screening of the
Film. Saad activist Madhuri Rao stated that earlier this morning, a twelve
member delegation of Bailancho Saad, a women's collective visited the CEO
Office at Altinho, with a representation which representation had drawn
attention to the fact that the casette promotes communal harmony and peace
and that suppression of the same is a gross violation of the fundamental
freedom of speech and expression.
Discussions with Assistant Electoral Officer J. Pai revealed that no written
orders regarding the Film HEY RAM and the Magazine Communalism Combat had
been issued by the CEO. The Saad pointed out that in effect, this means that
the screening of the Film and the circulation of the Magazine Communalism
Combat is not prohibited in any way and the public were misled by the State
at the instance of instance of the vested interests. Consequently, a
screening was organised which was well-attended. Copies of the Special Issue
of Communalism Combat titled Genocide 2002 were also sold at the screening.

Subject: Last night.... as it rained !
It was past 1am in the morning. I had just got in from
seeing a sick little asthmatic child in the hospital.
It was pretty late to get home but not unusual.
One needs a little time to unwind before one falls
asleep. So, I sat in front of this Dell and stared
vacantly at the articles from the Goan Newspapers.
It was disheartening to read the articles.
Perhaps, life in Goa is a wee bit better than this.
Perhaps, the newspapers give us the yellow side of
life.
Perhaps, I should buy some rosy tint for my specs!
I thought.
At that moment, it started pouring.
I went over to the window to have a look.
It's a fourth floor apartment. In the faintness of the
beachside lights one could see that the seawaves were
surfing up. It was getting rough.
The rain got heavier and the visibility poorer. The
crashing sound of the rain reminded me of the monsoons
in Goa.
My thoughts went over to Goa.... and to good people
like Aires, Fred, M&M, Tony, Joel, Emiliano, Alexyz,
Bosco, RP and my own family members.
I wondered how they were doing.
Well..........I hoped.
Did Goans have to travel so far away from home to make
a living?
Why has Goa become so corrupt and dirty?
Why are we so callous about the way we drive, and the
way we treat the sick and elderly?
Why are Goan Catholics helping to prolong the racist
Caste System.
Why are Goans finding it so difficult to find good
governance?
The story I was reading in the Navhind, last, was the
unbelieveable Cricket Scam.
Oh what a sham !
Is there nothing sacred anymore..... besides money?
Is Money ALL that matters?
And what greed? about 100,000 US dollars per player to
FIX a one-day match ?
And what about our little Goa?
The Portuguese cannot come back - never mind the
daydreamers and the saudade for those days of classy
functions and cleanliness.
Even Governor's rule ( probably the only clean spot in
the past 38 years ) cannot come as a long term
solution.
Who does one turn to?
The Congress?, the MGP?, the BJP?, the NCP?
They have ALL failed us Goans over and over and over
again.
It is probably a good idea for us Goans to leave the
politicians to their politricks, DO NOT VOTE AT ALL,
accept our fate at the mercy of the all-powerful and
set up SELF-HELP programs for our people.
Never mind the odds...but that might be the way
forward.
It was close to 3am.
The area surrounding the apartment complex was soaking
wet.
It was wet too..... by the window I was standing at.
Did some rain come in ?
or Was it Tears for my beloved Goa?

KARACHI: A new anthem for peace rang out last week in the hostile climes of South Asia
as the rest of the world nervously watched two neighbours up their military and
nuclear ante. The release of Join your Hands in Peace was indeed opportune: conflict
resolution has never been as out of reach as it is now. Three Pakistani pop
stars---Fakhir, Schezad Mughal and Shafqat Amanat Ali--and Dubai diva Hayat Aloui
shared the stage to make a compelling peace statement. St Patrick's choir--the soulful
voice of Pakistani Christians and termed by Mughal as the country's best
choir--provided the backup vocals.
The peace anthem is recorded in four languages; Urdu and Arabic convey the message to
Muslims while the English and French portions are meant for the Western world.

Dear friends on GoaNet and TGF,
We all know Alfredo de Mello. He has been a regular
contributor to GoaNet and The Goan Forum. Of late, he
has been "under the weather" and awfully quiet.
At TGF we have tried to retrieve from his vast
recollection, as much knowledge we could. We are not
even half there.
After a couple of CerebroVascular accidents, Alfredo
does have problem reading,though mercifully his sight
is intact.
Please do say a small prayer for him and towards his
full recovery.

Thanks for your delightful post.
I don't want to refute specifically any of your comments because I
don't find anything in them that challenges the view that mainstream
science has proceeded mainly by induction and confirmation, and only
in a trivial sense by falsification. I have read a couple of Karl
Popper's books, "The Self and Its Brain", and "Knowledge and the Body-
Mind Problem", in which he discusses falsification, among many other
things. His ideas, as far as the mind-body problem is concerned,
failed to impress me. Perhaps my mind is not dense enough to
appreciate them. But I would go out on a limb and say that very few
people with a head centrally placed on their shoulders would accept
the Popperian idea that there are three worlds, as anything other
than eccentric.
I must admit, however, that despite my reservations about Popper's
other views, for a while I too was convinced that falsification was
an important precept of the scientific discovery process. But over
time my simple-mindedness proved to be a limitation in this respect
as well. I could not think past the realization that every instance
of falsification of a hypothesis is simultaneously an instance of
confirmation of the opposite hypothesis.
This lowly notion persuaded me not to regard Popper's contribution
any more charitably than calling it a trivial advancement in
thinking. To use your analogy, finding a white swan is indeed a
falsification of the hypothesis that swans are black. But how can I
deny that it can also be regarded as a confirmation of the hypothesis
that swans are white? No amount of Nobel laureate name-dropping will
convince me that it is not. To my simple Goan mind, the distinction
between the usage of the term "falsification" instead
of "confirmation" in science is as trivial as the distinction
between "right" and "not wrong". No matter how many "induction
turkeys" are sacrificed in its name, it will always remain the banal
dichotomy that it appears to be to light-headed guys like me who are
frequent targets of light-hearted comments.
As a scientist interested in bread and butter science, I would much
rather be inclined to accept the mundane scientific approach
exemplified by NASA researchers who are looking for "confirmatory"
signs for water on Mars. They are not trying to falsify the
hypothesis that there is no water on Mars. But they might have had to
do that if the Popperian species of humans were not so endangered,
and one of these heady creatures were sitting on their funding review
committee. What it would practically amount to, is to merely rephrase
a sentence stating the exact opposite of their original hypothesis.
And I have to tell you, ordinary scientists - those who float in the
moat around ivory towers, would much rather spend their time
gathering trivial confirmatory facts, than awkwardly constructing
trivial sentences conjugating the verb "falsify", merely to satisfy
some Popperian ego.

P.S. Martin Gardner's literary and intellectual acumen and
contributions can match any Nobel laureate's any day. Two whole
generations of Scientific American readers (many of whom became Nobel
laureates) grew up reading his brilliant column
entitled "Mathematical Recreations" in this wonderful magazine. His
belief in God is based on faith - not scientific evidence, and that's
a good thing.
Skeptical Inquirer is a solid journal that attempts to apply critical
inquiry to all ideas and observations. You should read it. It even
has some Nobel laureates on its editorial board. A few might even be
believers or non-believers in God based on faith. I don't know if any
of them hold those beliefs based on scientific evidence. But even if
they don't, what the heck, nobody is perfect.
