"WITHDRAW ANTI-META STRIPS CASES": The United Goans Democratic Party (GDP),
a partner of the ruling coalition has demanded that the BJP-led government
withdraw all cases pending against the anti-Meta Strips Limited campaigners
and that all the government primary schools, which had been handed over to
private organisations "without proper transparency", be reverted back to
the government. UGDP leaders met the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on
Wednesday and submitted to him a copy of the 16-point programme. The other
points include strict implementation of fishing ban, no privatization of
beaches, status quo on language issue, no compromise on secularism,
proportionate employment and declaration of agriculture as industry. (H)
MAHA RASHTRA APEX CORPN IN DIRE STRAITS: Investors are up in arms against
the Maha Rashtra Apex Corporation, Manipal, allegedly for entertaining
deposits of the public to the tune of Rs.330 crore in Goa and around
without apprising them of the institution's unsound financial status. (GT)
"YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A MINISTER TO SERVE PEOPLE": "I know that I can
perform without being a minister, and we've been elected to serve the
people. We can serve MLAs and don't have to be ministers to do so. Finances
ought to be distributed equally by any government that be." (Mathany
Saldanha, UGDP MLA from Cortalim, in an interview with Herald).
COALITION TO FORM PANEL: The ruling coalition partnersBJP, MGP and UGDPare
to form a co-ordination committee for improved working relationship and

MATHANY VOWS TO REMAIN NEUTRAL: Though the United Goans Democratic Party
presidium stressed that the party along with their three MLAs has fully
supported the coalition government led by BJP, Cortalim MLA Mathany
Saldanha of the UGDP reiterated that he would remain neutral. At a press
conference yesterday, Saldanha said, "I want to be a free man. I will not
like to be dominated or asked to remain quiet when I differ on any issue
with the government. I will not be bound by the Whip." (GT)
GETTING RID OF "RIVER PRINCESS" WITHIN A WEEK? When questioned about the
fate of the "River Princess", at a UGDP press conference yesterday, the
newly appointed Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco's response was: "What's
that? Come again�" When the UGDP secretary whispered to Pacheco "it's the
grounded ship at Candolim", Pacheco promptly replied, "Give me a week and I
will remove it". Radharao Gracias quickly intervened to say: "He will look
into it within a week's time". (GT)
MUMBAI-GOA HIGHWAY MISHAP: At least 19 persons were killed and 45 others
injured, nine of the seriously, when a bus carrying them fell into a river
in the wee hours on the Mumbai-Goa highway, about 85 kms fro Alibag in
Maharashtra. (GT)
NON-AVAILABILITY OF BOOKS: Though the schools reopen on June 10, the
non-availability of textbooks around the State has put the students in a
quandary. Bookstores are again faced with an acute shortage of text-books
of classes V to X. The books were to be dispatched from the Ahmedabad

HERITAGE GROUP OPPOSED TO RENOVATION OF CITY GARDEN: The Panaji Municipal
Council's proposal of beautification of one of the capital city's oldest
gardens, the Municipal garden at the Church Square, met with strong
opposition from the Goa Heritage Action Group, who expressed their
disagreement on the modalities of the plan. (NT)

YOGA FOR KRC DRIVERS: Pulling up their sleeves to face the monsoons, the
Konkan Railway Corporation is gearing up for yoga meditation for their
staff, especially locomotive drivers, who work under extreme stressful
conditions. This is besides the routine safety measures taken by the
Corporation to ensure that moon-related accidents are avoided. (NT)
MASSIVE PLASTIC CLEARANCE DRIVE: The Travel & Tourism Association of Goa in
co-ordination with the staff of Alfran Group of Hotels, held a massive
plastic clearance drive at Dona Alcina Resorts, Candolim. The staff of the
hotel, taxi drivers, staff of neighbouring hotels and establishments,
Sarpanch and panchas of Candolim and the general public took part in the

KTC SUSPEND LUXURY BUSES: Kadamba Transport Corporation has decided to
suspend Vasco-Mumbai hi-tech luxury bus temporarily wef 10 June from Goa
and from 11 June from Mumbai end, due to inadequate public demand. (GT)
PRIYA TOPS HSSC EXAMS: Priya Shetty from Mushtifund Higher Secondary,
Panaji, has secured the first rank at the HSSC examination conducted by the
Goa Board. She has secured 529 marks out of 600. (GT)
KRC WORKERS UNHAPPY: The KRC Employees Union has expressed unhappiness with
the Finance Minister for imposing tax regulations, which challenges the
railway employees' right of free passes and privilege ticket orders. (H)
CHICALIM COMUNIDADE PETITION ADMITTED: The Panjim Bench of the Bombay High
Court has admitted the petition filed by the Comunidade of Chicalim
challenging the amendment to the Comunidade code legalizing encroachments
on Comunidade lands. (H)
CORNER STONE FOR MES COLLEGE: The corner stone for the new building of MES
College complex was recently laid at Zuarinagar, Vasco, by the chairman of
the Murgao Education Society, Mr Vasantrao Joshi. The proposed building
will house the higher secondary section. (NT)
UK REDUCES VISA SERVICES: The British Deputy High Commission in Mumbai has
reduced visa services and visa applications would not be accepted for the
time being from those who have not traveled to the UK earlier. A restricted
service will operate under which only applications that qualify under the
"drop box" criteria will be accepted, says a press note issued in Panjim. (H)
WOMAN TURNS TO GOD: With her husband partially paralysed, Natalina
Fernandes of Palolem in Canacona and the sole breadwinner in a five-member
family, has been rendered jobless by the Canacona Municipal Council and
Tourism department since October 2001, after having put in 14 years of
service. "Only God will take care of me, my husband and children," says
Natalina. (H)
TN VARSITY EXTENDS PROGRAMMES TO GOA: Kamaraj University of Madurai,Tamil
Nadu, recognized by the Universities grants Commission and the Association
of Indian Universities, will conduct exams in Goa from this academic year.
